Start Watching Recording in Progress from Beginning(Failing)

It use to just loop the start, and now it jumps you to live with spoilers. That’s progress for you.

This is especially rough when trying to watch sports

Even if it does eventually work the implementation is bad especially for sports. You have to add a buffer on the end of recording to ensure you capture any extra time. But once the programme disappears off the guide you have no way to start the in progress recording. One step at a time I guess, lets see how long it takes just to get it working.

Try starting it from the DVR Schedule instead of the Guide.

It doesn’t give me that option in the DVR Schedule until it finishes recording. It just opens the window to modify the recording.

Same for me. Playing while recording has recently gotten much worse for me. Here are my current issues:

Plex on Android tv (Sony) doesn’t correctly show which channel is actually recording, so I can’t even play properly from the guide without starting a new stream and using 2 tuner channels. I have a recording set to use a specific channel, so now I can go to that channel, but it has grey dots whereas another channel not recording has the red dots. This has been a bug for the year I’ve been using it.

More recently, when I try to play the channel that is actually recording it gives me the prompt to watch live or from the start. Even if I select from the start, it goes to live, with no possibility to go back to the start, but it is recording. Maybe it’s opening two streams.

Same here on android tv

The various problems with watching while recording seem to have been fixed and broken again many times for us over the last couple of years. Every new release is a bit of a lottery.

With the current version (see below) it recognises that there is a recording and offers to start at the beginning, but when selected it often starts at the current live point.

Suspect the problem may have something to do with two shows with the same details being on at the same time, eg an evening news bulletin shown in SD on one channel and simultaneously in HD on another. In this situation it always seems to start at the wrong point.

Synology NAS running Plex Media Server 1.23.0.4497
Sony Bravia android TV running Plex 8.16.2.24953 app

I have zero SD channels enabled. I am never started from the beginning of an in progress recording. It is broken entirely. Stuff like this makes me hesitant to ever upgrade. When you find something was working and now is broke you’re most likely going to be sitting around for months wishing you never updated. This one is going on 2-3mo now.

2 to 3 years now actually…

Two years broke and barely acknowledged, sure. Then it worked for nine months…and now without a seeming shred of QA, it’s broken again, and who knows for how long this time. But hey, there’s loads of s*** i dgaf about included now… … … .

I haven’t been on the Plex forums for quite a while. While browsing tonight, I was somewhat surprised that this thread is still around.

My wife and I watch NBC Nightly News With Lester Holt every night on our nvidia shield in the Living room. The news program airs at 5:30 pm central time and we usually start watching it around 5:55 pm. We start playing the show from the guide and always get the option to start watching from the beginning. I always fast forward through the commercials. Sometimes we are interrupted and miss something and have no problems rewinding to go back and see what we missed.

I also watched plenty of NFL games last season, again, being able to watch from the beginning and skipping through the commercials, 1/2 time show, etc. Rewinding to repeat an awesome play or something that I missed works too.

I really can’t say why it works for me. Perhaps it does because I have spent way too much money on server hardware (Intel Core i7-8086k, 32GBs RAM, 512GB nvme SSD and 10 TB Seagate exos hard drive for storage). I also have 4 nvidia shield pros.

When I try to join a channel already in progress with the Firestick 4k and select “watch from beginning” it will start it live instead. Channel originally started with Roku. We are so close to having Live TV working great on Android.

That is the problem I think. Plex is so universally adaptable to platforms and configurations that its bugs are very hard to manage.

I run both my server and playback on the shield. Your server is on a PC. The codes are different. Maybe even different people writing and debugging them. This sort of thing lends itself to exactly the type of problems I see in these forums. Widely different experiences from different users based on tons of different hardware setups.

It’s great that we have so many different options, but I imagine it also makes a bug free platform nearly impossible.

I don’t pretend to understand PLEX’s priority when it comes to bugs, but the age of this thread makes me think this is not an issue for most people.

I have seen some progress, so I will continue to wait and hope.

This is why I am testing out using the HTPC client currently in pre release. The Plex for windows app in my experience always seems to suffer less bugs than other versions, maybe because the software is develiped on PC’s. Hopefully the same will be true for the HTPC client as it matures.

Maybe Plex could produce a hardware client like OSMC do with the Vero 4k, that has good support and just works.

Sorry, but given the track record exhibited in this thread alone, I wouldn’t trust PLEX to provide effective support for anything moving forward and wouldn’t give them another nickel. 3+ years and nothing but arrogant, dismissive and diversionary responses for serious user issues. That’s not how to show concern for existing customers. Think about it. They control the software that creates the stream, they control the software that plays the stream and they still can’t make it work on a local network. Why should you believe they can do any better in a mixed environment? IMO their game is singularly focused on new revenue, period, and will sell you and tell you anything to get it.

The disappointing thing is that this “watch from beginning” was working not too long ago on the Android client. I’m on Android TV but I think it’s the same client as for Fire TV

Writing this while watching F1 qualifying live because I didn’t dare trust Plex to let me start watching later

It worked on ROKU for awhile as well. I actually thought they may have fixed it for good and then BOOM, another random update. This is NOT that difficult if they wanted to fix it. And yes, I’ve done a LOT of multi-platform software development in my days, probably longer than most PLEX developers have been alive

Is this how Plex finds out about problems with their software? Does anyone know if Plex actually looks at these forums and then act to fix problems. This was working on my NVIDA Shield for quite some time, but stopped working over the past few months.

This thread is 34 months old as I type. That’s all you really need to know.
