Let’s just call it three (3) years old, and sill not working…
Let’s just call it hopeless
Have been having the same problem for a while with the Plex app on my Sony Android TV. Very frustrating as others have already said.
In my case when I try and “watch from start” it takes me to the beginning of the recording, but just loops back to the beginning every few seconds. I can’t seek forward or back - just seems to be stuck in a loop at that point.
However, what I do as a workaround for this is play the programme “live” and then rewind back to beginning of recording - that seems to work … although it is frustrating when I want to start watching half way through F1 as I have to try and avoid seeing the current result on screen while rewinding!!
Not ideal, but does at least allow me to get around the problem for now. Just thought I’d mention it here in case anyone else finds this useful.
Plex at their best as usual.
What should be a BASIC FUNCTION of a DVR, they can’t get that right and can’t be bothered to make it right.
Anyone thinking of wasting their money on this product needs to look elsewhere.
Hello Plex.
My server is a QNAP NAS, Client is Apple TV. Reading the thread, seems to be a reader and writers problem. Sometimes i get a play from the beginning option which works, other times there is no option.
The issue seems to be buffering within the client and perhaps permissions within the server. The client should buffer local within limits with read only access to the server. Also setting commercial skip will complicate the issue on the server as the program buffer code is analyzing the content in “real time” and can be the source of the failure mode. (perhaps keeping two streams in parallel, one clean with the other edited for completed recorded playback once the commercial skip is completed)
The best case within the server is memory buffering for a recording event (program) which is then committed to disk. This is virtual storage which is problematic in implementation. Managing this virtual storage element should be done on a program by program basis and not as a common resource for all of the flex envrionment. This is key issue an embedded software engineer would help solve this issue once and for all. This would lower performance latency as much as possible depending on the client buffer needs to begin a play.
For extra credit, thumbnails for forward and reverse scan would be nice like netflix supports on their client.
As an alternative, the client can start play and buffer the entire program as most of the use cases have the client and server on the same local network.
Hope this helps.
I have not tested this in a long time, so I downloaded and installed today’s beta and gave it a shot.

I selected a show that was in progress, selected “Watch from the start”, the show began to play. I hit the center button on my FireTV which displays the timeline, then the up rocker to see where I am on the timeline… and ya… I’m not at the start, I am watching live. I test multiple times with same result.
I then came over to my computer, loaded Plex and tried the same thing. “Watch from the start” works fine from my computer, just not from the FireTV.
Unfortunately all my actual watching occurs in my living room thru the FireTV.
So ya, this is still an issue.
I notice @elan Plex CTO and Co-Founder has plenty to say on Apple TV and Plexamp threads, that he clearly uses. Apparently the brand new Apple TV remote only released a month ago doesn’t yet support the circular motion fast forward and rewind. Meanwhile back on planet Android we can’t even watch an in progress recording from the start, but nobody seems to care.
@DaveBinM - do you have any updates on this item? thanks!
This thread is quite long running, and has spiralled well away from the original issue, which was resolved long ago. Can you be more specific about what you’re referring to?
Sure! Watching a recording in progress still does not work properly. When you select “start from beginning”, sometimes it will instead start live, or sometimes it will start from the beginning but then start looping. I have seen it both ways over the last few months.
I believe this thread is discussing the same issue.
For reference I am using 2019 shield as both server and player.
It did work, but that was a recent regression that caused it to not work again (as I commented in that thread). It’s an issue we’re currently investigating, and hope to have a fix for soon to address that regression. As we have a thread for that current issue, and this thread is so old, and filled with a mishmash of issues over time, I’m going to close this one, and ask that any new things are raised in new threads.
