Start Watching Recording in Progress from Beginning(Failing)

Yep, same here. fails to play back on my shields. I find that selecting to convert automatically instead of streaming original file will allow playback but manually forwarding through ads risks breaking it.

Sat on the sofa with my family last night waiting for the recording to finish so we can start watching it. This can’t be 2021 right …maybe they just want me to buy arcade so I can play Atari games while waiting for the recording to finish and really get that retro feeling.

Plex is such a tease, it’s always so close to being great, then some other basic feature will get broken, while more nice to have but not essential features are added. For a while last year watching in progress recording was possible, now it’s just a fond memory.

I do wish when Plex employees ask for more logs because they can’t recreate issues, they would also give full details of the system they are testing on. That is a system I would very much like to build

I just came online to see if this was a “me” problem or still a general problem. It’s pathetic that Plex are ok to invest in arcade games but not sort out this problem which has been on-going for years!

I’ve I try and watch a DVR programme that is till recording, I’m unable to watch from the start as it just stutters and shudders, in a loop around the start of the recording.

On my Sony TV (Android) I’m not able to do anything… If I switch to shield, sometimes, only sometimes, I’m able to watch it live and then pause, then rewind the recording. This is just a joke, especially if you’re watching a sports match that shows the scores!

If I try and use a Plex client on my laptop, I don’t get this problem anywhere near as much!

DVR was a selling point for Plex Pass subscriptions once-upon-a-time… But it still doesn’t work for general clients!

Thanks for posting your reply. I know of many other fixes/solutions, but it doesn’t address the elephant in the room… So my point is to try and get some traction to have the Plex developers take this problem seriously :crying_cat_face:

@DaveBinM apologies for the ping, can you let us know if the latest issues are being actively worked on?

Stoney silence as always from Plex.

Couple of months this nonsense has been going on now, although it’s just non stop bugs with the DVR function (THAT WE PAY FOR!).

Prospective new users take note and look elsewhere before wasting your cash on this bug ridden product. Jeezo, you’d think they had just launched into beta by the state of it.

USELESS!

I was given a 1 year ban for “complaining about this” and it’s over. I see nothing has changed. How sad is that? I haven’t missed a single thing

I was wondering where you went. :upside_down_face:

Well, it did sort of work last year, I’ll give them that. At least you could start a recording from the beginning, but woe betide you don’t want the recording to randomly jump to the live stream and spoiler yourself…

The whole Plex product is a mind numbing disaster of constant “feature” updates nobody wants (to monetise it even more of course) and no effort to make the core product work with the ACTUAL features people want!

The ONLY good thing I can possibly think of to say about Plex is that it remembers what episode of a show I’m on.

And, er, that’s it.

Sometimes it can take a year or more to fix an issue: Can not record any program from ION, Channel 33.1 in Seattle. Transcoder Error
Still, I’m happy it has been fixed.

I see a lot mentions of improvement in yesterday Android client update to version 8.15:

  • Player: crash could occur when playing an item from the postplay.
  • Player: improve Live TV playback.
  • Live TV: improve tune times when switching channels.
  • Live TV: switching channels could be slower than expected.
    ETC…

Just tried it quickly (NVidia TV Shield and server version 1.22.1.4228) to kick a in progress recording from beginning and it worked!

However, I didn’t have time to give it an exhaustive testing so I’m wondering if some other folks gave it a tried and notice a firm fix on this issue and many others discussed in this thread?

I’ll keep testing it in the next days if I can catch in progress recordings… perhaps I have been just lucky…

This is the link to the full fix details of latest android release:

I just updated to the latest server and android app versions.

Running a couple quick tests - I can get it to work, but with limitations.

The first try I only waited a minute or two and I don’t think that was long enough because it didn’t work and ultimately ended up killing the recording. The next try I waited longer and was successful.

I will keep playing with it over the next few days to see if there are any other nuances.

All in all - good progress!

So running the latest Plex player and PMS when watching from the beginning of a current recording it just starts the programme “live” and not actually from the beginning. This is on Nvidia Shield. @cire12 any update for this as a known issue?

Yeah that’s the behavior I’m seeing too. A slight improvement on the endless spinning, but still not desired behavior!

This has been a known issue for almost three (3) year now…

When I first got my shield it didn’t do it. Which was in May 2020. Always worked. Now, not at all.

Just tried this. It started from live instead of starting from the start on Android 8.15.1. Plex app on my LG TV consistently works on the same server. From my experience the Android app client is terribly buggy.

Just tested again - selecting start from beginning started it from live rather than the beginning.
