Starting PMS at Boot on Windows

Server Version#: 1.25.8.5663
Player Version#: 4.69.1
I am migrating from a Windows 7 based server to a Windows 10 Pro 64 bit server.
Plex runs fine without too many issues not related to this topic but being headless if windows reboots say after a windows update, PMS does not start if the user is not logged in.

This topic has been raised several times on this forum and there are a number of possible solutions but I would like to canvas advice on the best option for my scenario. Some options include:-

  • Using a third party app PmsService that creates Plex as a Windows Service as outlined in Plexopedia. However this means creating a second user account and moving installation files to the new account and then editing the registry.

  • Using third party service applications NSSM, Always Up etc

  • Using Task Scheduler to start Plex at system startup

  • Using Group Policy Manager to force an auto-login. This only works with a single account that has to be administrator I believe?.

  • Some other more complicated hacks

I only have a single administrator account so the fourth option above might be the easiest and most appropriate for me but I would appreciate feedback on the success people might have had with the various options.
This headless server is primarily a file server storing all my personal documents, photos videos and pictures plus my Plex library of movies TV shows and Music. It backed up regularly to Onedrive and to another cloud service. It currently does not run any other services other than Plex DVR.
Many thanks

Not to my knowledge. It can be any Windows user account. It’d be sensible to use a restricted user account.

Adding another user account is no big deal, IMHO.
Copying/moving the Plex data folder to a commonly accessible location is advisable anyway. It makes things much easier in case of a crash or re-installation of Windows etc.

Thank you Otto My only concern would be mapped drives under a restricted user account, particularly a mapped online OneDrive folder that is particularly pernickity.
