Status of experimental "convert video while recording" feature

I’ve noticed that the “convert video while recording”-feature in the Plex DVR tuner settings is still labeled als experimental. What’s the latest on this feature? Has there been any improvements lately or has it been stable already?

What kind of conversions are actually done by this feature anyway? According to the Plex website, the video is converted to H.264.

Transcode – Transcode the video stream to H.264 and place it in a standard TS container. This helps save space and make the content more compatible with player devices, but it requires a fast CPU. (Audio is always retained as-is.)

But what happens in case of HD streams which are already broadcast in H.264 MPEG4 AVC?

And wouldn’t it make sense to use this feature to optionally convert audio tracks as well, when they are provided in a non-conforming format like AAC?
