Stereo -> multichannel by any means necessary!

I’m looking for a means, either within Plex for Windows itself, (wishful thinking…) or any standalone utility, to upconvert a stereo sound stream (flac, mp3) to multichannel so I can hear the sound from all my speakers. I am not talking about “virtual” headphone surround. I mean actual multichannel output. Either a clone of the stereo signal or the faux-surround that AVRs like to do.

My laptops Displayport sound output supports multichannel, but does not have the Windows 10 effects tab, so I can’t use the built-in utility that could upmix that I found on some systems. At one point I had a clunky system with my AVR in the loop but I’m trying to get away from having spaghetti cables all over my work area.

Plex, if you are listening, PLEASE add this simple feature to your player. Thanks!

The usual way would be
Laptop > HDMI > AVR > TV
With surround speakers of course connected separately to the AVR.
It would be then the task of the AVR to do the “upmixing”.
This is the least “cable clutter”-involving way, with only one HDMI cable out of the laptop.

If you of course want to use the laptop screen to watch your movies, then things get more “interesting”.

Thanks. I think I have an unusual set of requirements because I have a surround set of amplified monitor speakers which I like very much. These have 6 line level inputs which are self-amplified, but don’t have any surround upmixing. That is why I didn’t want to drag another AVR into things. But I take your point that most people would have an AVR to power their speakers.

I think I tried this already to integrate it into PMP, similar to this

but failed to do so.
