Stitching DVDs together- file size issues

So, I’ve ripped some DVDs. Some movies are old school and span across two DVDs. Others have been ripped in chapters.

I was considering using a video package to stitch them together, however the file sizes seem ridiculous and I’m sure it must be me.

For example, there’s four files that total 10gb, but when I go to render the video, the final video in HD (I am assuming the original rips are HD) is a total of over 30gb.

I’ve tried on both Premier and Movie Maker.

What am I doing wrong?

DVD doesn’t have HD.
DVD uses MPEG2 as video codec, which is way less efficient than AVC or even HEVC.

I propose this MO:

  1. rip the DVDs without changing the codec or resolution, using Makemkv (Google it)
  2. append the parts to get a complete movie, following this HowTo [HowTo]: joining multi-part movies files with MKVtoolnix GUI
  3. Employ Handbrake to convert the MPEG2 codec to AVC, to remove the black borders and to remove the interlacing if necessary.
