Stop adding porn with your promoted content

We do get to choose, the problem here was it got pushed as an opt out. I also agree having to track every update and play psychic to determine that they will put very seedy movies under kids cartoon choices is a bit much to expect for a consumer to catch.

To much focus on getting the streaming service used and not enough on how it could impact the current users of the media server.

Very poorly managed change.

Agreed. Plex is pushing their own agenda now.

But if you have Movies & TV available, their movies aren’t even something you can opt-out of. For the life of me, I can’t figure out how to leave the Plex library, which means my 4 year old is only a few clicks away from Evil Dead or The Terminator… which are fine movies, when he’s older. But right now, when I’m trying to teach him kindness and solving problems with words and all that, I want to be able to control which media is easily accessible.

the only thing low brow is your obvious lack of a education. your backwoods ranting isn’t going to get you anywhere. thread and you muted.

nothing wrong with the above post

Lol k. I have two master’s degrees, and I design apps for a living. So I understand why this decision was made, and why it’s a bad business decision. But hey, keep digging your own grave.

Wow guys. This has become a Facebook extension. Not sure the product engineers are going to get much out of this discussion. Kroboz has made his point. Now it would be good to conclude with a response from Plex.

Let’s consider the points made in this thread taken. Keep in mind this service has only just been released. I don’t mean to preach the lore of „banana ware“… but let’s give your feedback a chance to be digested and sink in.

As for kroboz‘ very specific question:

Scenario 1: Restrict access via parental controls in a Plex Home setup

Within a Plex Home setup you can assign your managed users a „restriction profile“ (small kid, older kid, teen…). This will filter the content they can see based on the media content rating.
https://support.plex.tv/articles/parental-controls/

The restriction profile / parental controls apply to your own server’s content as well as the content from Plex‘ „Movies & TV“ section (video on demand)

Scenario 2: Disable access

(A) Within a Plex Home

Go to https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/online-media-sources and set Plex Movies & TV / Video on Demand to Disabled for Managed Users. From what I’ve experienced, online media sources are disabled by default for Managed Users in a Plex Home!

(B) For regular users

Go to https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/online-media-sources and set Plex Movies & TV / Video on Demand to Disabled. Each friend / person with their own Plex Account needs to apply this individually.

Appreciate the reply, but I guess this is now a bug report. Movies & TV didn’t show up in my online media sources until I shut down and restarted my media server:

But it showed up as intended after a restart:

I’m on Version 1.18.2.2058.

At this point, the Blockbuster bargain bin movies are no longer showing up on my server, and I’m satisfied. But still disappointed in the design ethos behind this decision, and strongly exploring other options besides Plex. What if Plex decides to push content promoting specific political views or casual racism? Not unimaginable, given what’s happening in tech.

Screw them for trying to add new content, right?
Yeah, there should most likely be some kind of toggle for explicit content, but then again you manage your own server and you can disable it just fine.
If Plex pushes inappropriate content I will disable it if I can, and if not request for the possibility here.
But there is no need to pull the “I might just not use plex!” card a bunch of times to… Do what? I don’t know.

Also, I’ve been browsing that list of movies they added, apart from having some fully clothed women on the cover of a love story movie, I don’t find any 18+ XXX ■■■■ anywhere. Unless it somehow ended up in your recommendations for some reason.

Edit: I checked again not to look stupid, but where the hell did you find this porn any way? I can’t find it and I tried… Perhaps you accidentally added it into your own library?

I’ve been following this with amusement, but I have to admit that some of the content showing up is pretty seriously raunchy. There’s definite artistic merit in Derek Jarman’s work but I doubt anybody wants their younger kids watching Sebastiane, Christian allegory or not, what with the flopping penises and gory abuse. Then there’s Snake Dancer, a biopic about an exotic dancer in South Africa. And so on.

So, I get the point.

I haven’t opened Plex in a while, as I use it occasionally for us to view our old family photos and videos, and the FIRST thing that shows up is Plex recommending PORN, and our CHILDREN are right there with us. Yeah, sure it can be disabled (believe me, I disabled it afterward), but I find that this behaviour and advertisement highly inappropriate. Shame on Plex.

Which movie was that? I am just curious, because I am not in the US and sadly I don’t get any porn at all

I’m not in the US either. I’m in Canada.

Which movie was that?
Porn is not intended to be available per the VOD media source.
If there was a mistake, it will be removed swiftly.

I also guess that the opinions as what to be considered to be porn might vary.
Anyways, still interested in an example.

Under “Most Popular,” and one was “Porn Star Zombies,” another was “Snake Dancer,” and a lot of the thumbnails show almost naked women. I’m going through it right now, and there are several inappropriate suggestions. “Kosher Sex,” “The Sex Monster,” “Bonobo,” “30 Nights of Sex,” “Strictly Sexual,” “Beautiful Girl,” “Sebastiane,” it’s endless…

Maybe they’re not technically “porn,” I have no idea, and I’m not about to watch them or Google them to find out either.

Inappropriate for whom?

Please understand that the selection is based, among other criteria, on the ‘age rating’ that is applied to the used user account.
If you are using your personal Plex user account (which doesn’t have an ‘age rating’), then none of the content in any library is filtered.

If you are using Plex on a device, which may be seen or may get accessed by minors, it might be a good idea to

  • create a managed user,
  • apply an appropriate ‘Restriction Profile’ and
  • use this user account from now on on this device.

Nudity ≠ Porn, at least that’s my understanding.

Thanks for pointing out how to apply age ratings, Otto.

You need to accept the fact that Plex is in the WRONG for not having BY DEFAULT no pornographic/nude/inappropriate content showing. It’s inappropriate for everybody, sexual nudity and pornography should be illegal just as child porn is… but I digress.

But instead, here I am trying to convince a moderator that the titles and thumbnails of suggested videos and disgusting filth are inappropriate and should not be showing by default.

I don’t care about the settings that I can change so such things aren’t showing. They shouldn’t show. Period. Since this kind of stuff is not illegal currently, then they shouldn’t show by default and users should have to opt in.

I don’t need an explanation on how to arrange my Plex account. I need Plex to not suggest disgusting filth by default.

Maybe it’s not porn. But the thumbnail suggests that it’s inappropriate. I was naming off movies according to their titles and thumbnails.
