I make ‘Better than source’ DVD material all the time.
(that doesn’t work on HD material… but I make 'em so close to source - it hardly matters - and it absolutely doesn’t matter to me, family or friends - we watch the material - not the bit rate)

the LapSharp Filter is ‘Light’ with a ‘Film’ tune - unless, of course it’s animation…
I may have raised or lowered the bit rates some - but you should be doing that anyway… I do recommend you try my rates and view honestly - then adjust from there.

So I’ve yet to do a single HEVC stream from my old system, and to my old devices.
I processed a DVD rip to h.265.
My first client choked on it. The old Windows 10 App won’t play it. Black screen with audio. I figured as much. It’s old and past due and pulled from the store. Only other option is the web browser. It’s a 32bit system and can’t be upgraded.
1st Gen Chromecast transcodes it back to h.264.
None of the transcodes killed my system thankfully. But that was only on 480 content.

You should have converted a DVD using the second part of the guide 'cause it’s very likely you created a file NOTHING can play.

Did you pass through the original audio or did you convert it to a compatible format?
Did you include subs in Handbrake?
Bad idea - Handbrake turns all srt subs into ASS subs - wherein they won’t Direct Play on MANY things… where srt text subs will Direct Play on EVERYTHING (almost).
It took me about 10 years to learn to encode solid material - if this is your maiden voyage and you don’t follow the instructions - good luck and we’ll see ya in about 9 years and 11 months (but it’s very likely I’ll be dead by then…lol)

The AAC 2.0 audio is fine - that’s as compatible as it gets.
Interesting that Handbrake didn’t detect that there was a new version. I even checked for updates in the software before I ran all this. Thanks for the tip. I’ll go grab that, and then config HB with those settings and let it tool round the bay for a bit. Back in a bit.

don’t forget the 2 pass with turbo… when bit rate starving - it’s a must and goes a lot faster than you think. <—but worth every minute of it.

Currently encoding at avg fps of ~160. Rough time of pass one completion from start to completion is 15 minutes. 2nd pass should be roughly the same, so about 30 mins start to finish.

Your machine is doing well.
Notice my ‘Dimensions’ tab.
I had to counter HB’s Autocrop a bit to get the ‘853’ back (standard 16:9).
I stick with Auto, but check and fix as required.
HB goes a little crazy if there are dark scenes - so check it - always.
Letterboxed items won’t be ‘853’. They’ll be whatever they need to be, but always maintain the ‘480’ Height. That’s all the resolution you got - so get it all.
Ok. I’ll have to watch that better. I stuck exactly to your numbers. Now I understand it better. Next time…
After a short while you’ll know what the ‘Width’ should be.
4:3 is 640 <— and you can even sneak a bit of Height to get a bit more width, but don’t chop heads - if you know what I mean - and don’t lose that 480.
16:9 is 853
Super Widescreen (you know) is 1152
Super Duper Hateful 8 Widescreen is… whatever it is, but get that 480 - no matter what.
