Stream buffering/interruption after roku 11 update

Went out of town for a week and Roku was updated to OS 11. Haven’t been able to maintain a consistent stream on plex since.

You might want to detail your setup so someone can see if they have the same problem or help troubleshoot. Like the Roku model with model#, RokuOS version number (they have updated it already) and plex client version number.

I have a Roku Ultra and have completely different problems with RokuOS 11. My 480 video all looks like 8bit now. And played on other clients it’s fine. And that includes the two Roku devices I have that DIDN’T update to 11 yet. Frustrating.

Good luck

Chris

I don’t think it has anything to do with the Roku model because it was working fine before the upgrade to OS 11, but it’s a 3500 streaming stick running software version 11.0.0, build 4193-09 (updated today), and the plex server version is 1.26.0.5715 (latest version).

I forgot to say also that the plex app is version 7.0, build 8. Latest version for this Roku model apparently.

What is the signal strength to your wireless AP?
Do other streaming services stream OK?
Collect logs from PMS & the Plex client while the video is stuttering and post, maybe there’s something in there.
There are many people here who can help, but you have to give some hard details (logs) to look at.

Wireless signal strength is great - same as it ever was. Netflix no problems - haven’t tried others. Happy to submit logs but have never done that so would appreciate some instruction.

Actually signal strength is only a part of issues you can get when streaming wirelessly. In fact most streaming problems are the result of interference of some kind. If you are using 2.4 ghz you might try, if you can, 5 ghz as it has much less interference. If you need to stay on 2.4 try making your router use channels 11 or 1 as they often are less prone to interference.

But wired is always better than wireless so if your Roku can go wired it might help.

Lastly: You did not say how your server is connected but most agree that servers should NEVER be wireless.

I greatly doubt the Roku, but you did not say which model, is in any way responsible for your problems but I also doubt it is the Roku either.

Most likely it is a case of a “Post hoc ergo propter hoc” situation.
Have you done a power off reset? In doing that you should to keep the Roku disconnected from power for about 30 seconds.

Also even though Netflix works perfectly and Plex does not it does not mean that Plex or Roku had anything to do with your current problems. But they could have.

I don’t know about all that. Seems pretty cut and dry to me. Worked flawlessly for years with absolutely no problems until roku updated to OS 11, as I said initially.

Seems pretty obvious that it’s just another case of software (plex and/or roku) not keeping up with hardware, or vice versa.

Attached is my log file. The problems started 5/2/2022.

Do you have storage that’s frequently connected and disconnected?

The logs are quite full of entries about /Volumes/GoFlex Home Public/ being missing, perhaps spending much of the server’s time looking for missing files. The logs only go back to this morning because of it.

Not really sure how to answer that. I keep all my media files on an old NAS drive (3TB seagate - that’s the referenced “GoFlex”) wired to my LAN. I use two PCs as servers, an old mac mini wired to my LAN that I’ve been using for years as the main server and a relatively new dell vostro 15 laptop (wireless only, but 802.11ac) that I use as a sort of backup server.

Everything was working fine before I went out of town on 4/24/2022, and the only changes to the setup have been the Roku update to OS 11 that happened while I was away.

Perhaps the frequent NAS disconnections are the cause of the problem, or perhaps the frequent NAS disconnections are a symptom of other underlying network problems.

That’s one vintage Mac Mini you’ve got there!

It’s an old one for sure, but it doesn’t need to be any newer to be an adequate media server.

I just keep going back to the fact that I had ZERO buffering/stuttering problems before the Roku OS update. The hardware is exactly the same,

I have a couple different Roku TVs that have all updated to 11. I didn’t notice any performance change in Plex.

Maybe the equipment missed you when you were gone. Or maybe it’s a coincidence.

Did you verify that in the Roku Plex app, streaming settings are all “Original” and “Maximum” quality? During playback, what does the Plex Server Status/Dashboard show?

Is there a timestamp in the logs where you attempted playback today? It might be useful to try playback again, then gather and share logs again immediately - and note the time of the playback.

It might also be helpful to share Roku logs.

Just attempted playback with each of my servers, and both had significant buffering problems. Logs attached.
