Recently I’ve bought a Samsung 65Q60R TV. I installed on my pc Plex media server. My pc is wire connected to the router, but TV uses WIFI. Ofcourse I choose in plex server settings to share data only in local network. After sync TV with pc I can see all my media. problem occurs when I try to play 4K movie on my TV. I see that plex media server stream/upload to TV with my internet maximum upload speed 48Mbps, but 4K require around 70-100Mpbs. I thought if this devices are in the same local network then they will use it. Maybe I should change some settings?
If both devices are on the same network, Plex won’t touch your internet connection. Just as a side note… if you start using remote access your upload speed usually turns into the bottleneck as it determines how fast other devices outside your home network can access your media (while the download speed determines how fast you can access data from outside your home network).
That being said… WIFI and 4K are a tricky combination. If your TV supports a wired LAN connection faster than 100 Mbit/s, try to go for the wired connection instead!
While your WIFI might support faster connections by its specifications, that’s not the bandwidth usually available for actual data transfer. There can be tons of factors interfering, such as walls, furniture, any kind of wiring or electrical/electronic equipment close by, the distance, other WiFi devices in your home network or neighbor‘s WIFIs that operate in the same frequencies.
If a wired connection is not an option, you should try to positively influence / reduce the above interferences, e.g.:
try to use a 5 GHz network instead of the more crowded 2.4 GHz
check the location of the router to avoid it from being locked up or to optimize the distance between your devices
if you cannot influence the above, you might want to look into a PowerLine (LAN over your electric lines)
I tested internet speed on my TV. In speedtest.net I get more than 100+ Mbps DW. I actually pay extra for 5GHz router from my internet provider. Even I tryied to connect wired both devices to my old router Linksys WAG120N and use it as switch(in router from my internet provider I can connect only one device wired, rest only through wifi). After that the same thing happened. On my PC I saw upload speed limited to 48Mbps. Really I don’t get it why my local transfer is limited to internet speed. BTW my internet speed is 600/50Mbps.
Finally I figured it out. I don’t know why, but Plex on TV connect to my PC server over internet despite of I configured Plex server to be not visible outside local network. For sure I tested on other laptops and I can’t see my media contents.
