, I am a long time user of Plex, and I keep having one recurring issue which annoys me. The lack of scrubbing ability and the pause that often happens when you scrub along with cpu usage for transcoding.
Is there a way I could pre-transcode all videos for all the different devices I have, and simply disable all transcoding so that every video is delivered simply as http content and not going through heavy processing.
The goal is to never have live transcoding for Chrome, Recent (2017) samsung tv, Apple TV and WebOS.
Thoughts? I would have loved to do STRM files to pre-encoded HLS stored on a CDN but this seems to not really be a thing.
Just use Handbrake with basic parameters to produce a plane mp4 or mkv file. You may need to experiment a bit to get the ideal combination of file size and quality but I use Handbreak for all my files and I never see any transcoding.
It is a little time consuming but:
It only needs to be done once for each file and can be automated so that it batch processes a number of files at a time.
Handbreak does not use excessive cpu and it is also very reliable.
Once you have all your files preprocessed you will not need to do anything like that again., or at least only for new files.
One other advantage is that, usually, Handbreak will produce a smaller file without reducing quality very much. For me the file look identical before and after processing through Handbrake.
There are also other tools to do the same thing like FFmpeg Batch AV Converter or Fremake or MakeMKV or several others but I use Handbrake for most everything just because it is easy to use and reliable.
