Streming buffers wayyy too much ahead

Hey you all,

I was wondering if there is a way to control how much ahead the client buffers the streaming media…

The problem is while I am on a cellular and streaming some technical courses and am interested to watch just first 5-10 minutes from the whole 60 minutes video, plex client will in couple seconds buffer the whole length!! Which is extreme waste of my data plan. I mean like 300MBs taken just like that… and understand here I need decent quality to see whats on the screen (text/commands/code etc…).

While youtube detect cellular connection and buffers a teeny tiny portion ahead…

Another biggest drawback is when due to some noise (in a train or whatever) I need to go back 10 seconds and the whole buffered part ahead is lost!!! This is sooo frustrating. I understand that we are talking about streaming concept in general but lets make this better world we want to live in. So while I am inside media/library/folder do not throw away buffered content unless something changes (quality/audio/subtitles etc.) or user exit the media folder - meaning he is most likely done for now.

To understand my concern here… in my country cellular data are extremely overpriced (2GB/10€) but anyway why not improve it in general… So at the moment I am quite limited to streaming my own content while I travel which is pitty and wifi is almost never an option

Any suggestions/discussion will be much appreciated. Thanks :)!

This feature is likely to take a long time to implement (just based on plex’s implementation of user ideas in general). So while you wait, might I suggest that you sync your media to your cellular device prior to travel and delete it when you no longer need it? That’s sort of what the feature is for… Streaming in such expensive conditions is a problem a lot of the world faces, and is precisely why there’s a sync option
