Plex Server Version#: 1.18.8.2527 (lifetime plex pass)
Plex Server Specs: Windows 10 Pro x64, Gigabyte Aorus Z390, Intel I9-9900K, 32 GB Ram, 512MB M.2e SSD
Plex Player Version#: 7.29.2.16071
Plex Player Specs: NVidia Shield (3x2017 ed, 1x2015 ed)
Storage Specs: Netgear ReadyNAS 516, 6x6TB)
Network Topology: Cisco Catalyst 3750G, All devices hard wired (no wi-fi),
Movies ripped using MakeMKV (paid) and kept up-to-date. Some movies re-ripped multiple times as new versions released.
I’m so frustrated with playback performance and issues I don’t know what to do next. It has initially felt like a Plex server issue on Windows, but now I think it is the Player on the Shields.
Scenario 1 (Works fine):
Using Kodi on NVidia Shield direct to NAS, can play 4k flawlessly w/ and w/o PGS subtitles.
Scenario 2 (Works fine):
Using Plex web player on PC connected to same network, can play 4k transcoded down to 1080p w/ and w/o subtitles flawlessly.
Scenario 3 (FAIL):
4k Direct Play OR Transcoding down to 1080p w/o PGS subtitles to any TV (4k or not). The following movies play completely corrupt video: Ralph Breaks the Internet, Frozen II, Avengers: Infinity War, Maleficent, Abominable, Toy Story 4, X-Men Dark Phoenix, Detective Pikachu, Mary Poppins.
Scenario 4 (Works Mostly)::
4k Direct Play WITH PGS subtitles to any TV (4k or not). All movies appear fine.
Additionally, as movies play over time, including Blu Ray it will start to blip and pause during playback. This also happens when playing Live TV video where it will play fine for a while then degenerate into a completely stuttering and unwatchable state.
I’ve re-ripped using different drives, versions of MakeMKV, but given that I can play on Web/Desktop player and Kodi just fine it can’t be the video format itself (unless I’m missing something).
Settings I’ve tried:
- Passthrough set off and HDMI
- With and without the new player.
- Refresh Rate Switching on/off
- H.264 Max levels: Disabled, 5.2, 4.0
Any advice?
