Stuttering on XBox Series X

Repost due to being ignored by devs.

Server Version#: latest beta
Player Version#: latest on Series X

Playback is fine for the most part but if one pauses and resumes 90% of the time audio will be out of sync or it will stutter / loop for 5 seconds the same sound and the “loading” yellow circle will show up. This is fixed by pressing “left” to seek back and it will fall in place.

This also happens occasionally with no intervention. When I can I’ll record a video showcasing this issue.

If using plexkodiconnect on Kodi it smoothly plays anything with zero issues like these…

Not letting this die because it’s pretty shameful that this still occurs.

Bump.

Yes, I have this same problem with the Plex app on my Xbox Series X when playing high bitrate 4K HDR content. The video stutters / drops frames every few minutes of playback. However on Plex app on Mac + app on LG C2 both play fine, but the picture quality on the XBox is better IMO (I am not exactly certain why it looks better, perhaps it’s HDMI 2.1, perhaps it’s VRR, perhaps it’s refresh rate).

I noticed in the Kodi app there is a System Performance monitor and it consistently says my RAM usage is 90% to 95%, nearly maxed out just idling with no other apps or games open. CPU is at like 2%. I don’t know if Kodi itself is maxing out my RAM or if there’s another issue.

I did a power cycle (did nothing), then a full reset of my console (while keeping my apps & games) but that did not help either.

I am assuming it’s a memory usage issue. If I only have 5% or 10% RAM available and then playing high bitrate 4K HDR file pushes the system too far.

Agree with all of your points and also agree with image quality!

Regarding the RAM usage, it’s true it shows that in Kodi but if you use PlexKodiConnect, which is absolutely great (haven’t tested PM4K, the other one) it plays back every single thing, with 0 framedrops / stuttering.

It directplays PGS subs (XSX Plex app doesn’t) and directplays ANY audio (LG Plex App doesn’t). So if Kodi can literally direct play EVERYTHING then I see absolutely 0 reasons for Plex App to not do it on Xbox. Plus there’s no frame drops etc like I said. Plex has way more resources than Kodi, so why can’t the XSX app actually function properly is a mystery to me.

As soon as the new KODI version is out of beta I’m moving permanently to it with PM4K because it will support HDR/DV in Xbox.

I’ve talked about this issue for over 3 years now and nothing was done to fix it.

This is helpful info, thank you! I’ll try out the Plex addon in Kodi as a workaround. But you are correct, it is silly that we have to use so many layers of apps for smooth playback.

I’m watching the on-going development of Plex, but have switched to Kodi in the meanwhile. Kodi definitely has a few quirks, but has almost none of Plex’s playback issues…
Disappointing to have purchased a lifetime subscription to Plex and suffer through years of sub-par performance only to discover a ‘free’ platform delivers a close to flawless experience…

Keeping this alive. Having the same problem. Also getting green horizontal striping/artifacting periodically. Goes away if I force transcoding down to 20Mbps from native which is higher.

At this point just use Kodi with PM4K. Vastly superior experience compared to Plex app

I Installed Kodi + PM4K which completely fixed this issue for me and the only install took a couple of minutes.

See forum post: PM4K / PlexMod for Kodi (18, 19, 20, 21)

The only weird part is they don’t describe to add the repository in Kodi->Settings->File manager->Add source (this is step 1 in the recommended installation)

Then once you followed all of those instructions you run Plex from Kodi App and do the link with the 4 letter code.

I’ll say it has a couple issues :

  • continue watching is done on a per server basis. if you are used to multiple servers “continue watching” from pinned servers on ‘home’ screen you have to look at each server individually for continue watching.
  • it completely lacks the “social” features as well as the Watch Together feature.

Unfortunate about the Watch Together, but the other social features you can just do on your phone or on the browser (but I think most people don’t care about the social stuff)
