Xbox Series X - Stuttering

Plex on the Xbox Series X suddenly stutters BADLY on all content that is 720p or below. I have isolated it to having Direct Play enabled in the app. All of my other devices play just fine at all resolutions so it’s not my server. If I disable Direct Play, the stuttering stops but why should I suddenly have to do this? This just started a couple weeks ago. A little stuttering I can handle but this is absolutely unwatchable and, frankly, makes zero sense. How is it that I can play 1080p and even 4K content with no stuttering and Direct Play enabled but 720p and lower all stutters like crazy suddenly? Can someone please look into this?

Thanks for the suggestion, but no dice. Updated to the latest beta and still having this issue.

Also if it was an issue with the server or the server version, why would it be isolated to just the Xbox Series X? All of my other devices are playing fine with Direct Play enabled.

Hm mkv container and x264 with relatively high bitrate for 720p ? Yep it happens switched to x265 codecs for TV shows and most movies smooth on all my users as long as they not using wifi have 24p ticked in xbox system video settings

This recently (like within the last two days) started happening to me and my Series X. Almost all playback regardless of container and bitrate has a jitter/stutter. 1080+ files seem to be smoother, but a jitter/stutter is still present. If I force a transcode, the problem resolves, but that is less-than-ideal.

Yep. Direct Play is broken on the Xbox client. Would be cool if someone would actually look into this instead of trying to blame the server.

Wow. Now every time the app updates I have to reinstall it from scratch just to get it to launch. Since when did the Xbox Plex app become since a dumpster fire? Really disappointing.

Same here on my Series S… stuttering makes things unwatchable. It used to be fine. I dont notice it on my One S or other clients (tv, phone, web).

I’ve disabled DirectPlay and DirectStream but not an ideal solution.

I am having this same issue on Xbox Series X. It worked without issue for months and in the most recent change from the Xbox side is what is causing the issue. That’s why turning off Direct Play works because the server is transcoding it to the proper format for the client to understand. I’ve tried all sorts of workaround that I found on reddit and the internet in general and nothing works. My only solution I found was to disable direct play or just use a different client.

Is anyone listening? I am seeing more and more threads pop up about how this app has gone to absolute trash on the Xbox. Wtf is going on?

I’ve been getting stuttering also, when I bring up the advanced video OSD it shows that I’m getting frame drops, just wondered if you also saw this?

Yep, 2 users with Series X’s here, and they’re getting frame drops and stuttering also with Direct Play. The Xbox app is currently unusable.

@Moussa It’s pretty easy to replicate, it’s happening on most files until you force a transcode. I can gather some logs though if you need.

You are better off finding another player or client. I tried for months to get @Moussa to reply to my own thread about frame rate drops and stuttering, and he still has yet to respond or acknowledge the issue. When someone treats users that way it’s safe to assume they don’t really give a crap. Which is why I moved on to the ATV4K with Infuse for Plex playback.

Although Kodi works well on the Xbox Series X when you connect your Plex server to it. Maybe a viable alternative for you in the meantime.

I don’t get “bad” stuttering with my Series-X, but when i do get some noticeable chop in the video playback, pausing and playing again seems to resolve it. However, as @Furcheezi pointed out, I am frequently having to reinstall the Plex app on my Series-X, which seems to be needed after the app receives an update.

I also have a One-X and I have had 0 issues with playback or needing to reinstall the app on it.

I did notice a stutter during playback on mine but it wasn’t for lower than 720p video. I have some videos in 1080p 10Mb/s. I play larger 4K videos with no problems so I’ve been forcing it to transcode to a lower bitrate/resolution.

I just thought it’s something to do with the videos themselves because it’s only one TV show that is exhibiting this behavior.
