Hey kid, I'm a computer! Stop all the downloading.
I'd like to propose the ability to create subsections within sections. I don't see this being very useful for standard media types like movies and TV shows (although it could be for some, I just haven't thought it through), it would be great for personal videos and other shorts.
Here is my usage scenario: I have a section called "Shorts," and it's filled with mostly indie animation short films. Do any of you remember those awesome G.I. Joe Public Service Announcement videos from about 10 years ago? I've got a collection of 23 of them, they don't deserve their own section, but I don't like 23 unidentified videos cluttering up the Shorts section. I want to make a subsection, or a folder, within the Shorts section to hold these videos.
Agreed, I’d like to have an Anime section with TV and Movies as sub sections. Or how about a TV section with Cartoon, Documentary, Anime, … subsections? Yes, you could use genre but it’s a workaround not a fix
doesn’t the Collections field setting cover this for Movies?
I have my media files divided into 20 or so categories - Action, Anime, Rom-Com, Sci-Fi, Westerns - within these categories I then I have Collections so I can group all my James Bond movies together or all Pixar Movies together and then Pixar Shorts are in a separate group
Granted the All Items stills shows all items and when I scroll through this list I do have scroll through everything - but by sorting some items into Collections I can easily get to these groupings
I also use the Sort By title field to help group items together in my All Items as well as to keep movie series in order - ie - Bond movies - I have the movie title showing but I sort by Bond Year - so Dr No sorts on Bond 1967 - this keeps a collection together in the All Items menu and too when viewing the collection all items are in order of release rather than alpha by default in my Plex Client when I view By Collection - or with Star Wars - I may show the title of A New Hope but the movie file sorts on Star Wars 3.1 (VHS copy), Star Wars 3.2 (DVD copy), Star Wars 3.3 (Blu Ray copy) and so on …
TV Shows - my personal content has been handled well and I’m good with how this section is managed currently - and the ability to add multiple directories as needed I can sperate out what I want to here
Collections require manual taggin which ( given the troubles with database over the last week ) is not something I really wanna do.
Smart Collections ( or so called Smart Playlists in iTunes ) would be much more elegant solution. You could create rules ( which could be exportable ) and Plex would automatically group your files based on criteria.
For example you could have
1, all movies from Disney channel would be grouped automatically as they’re recorded ( and exported ) out of EyeTV/MCE 7.
2, all Comedies staring Adam Sandler would be also automatically grouped as you add new movies… and so on.
I hardly use current filters (except recently viewed and recently added) but Smart Filters would change that. Jam hinted almost a year ago that current filters are a stop-gap solution so i keep hoping Plex improves on this.
A little off topic but you could just as them to the G.I Joe tv show as they seem to be in the specials http://thetvdb.com/?tab=season&seriesid=77780&seasonid=25237&lid=7
