Sub-Sections

I have a big enough library that in order to allow people to sort through things easier we have made a lot of different sections (Movies, TV Shows, Kids TV, Kids movies, etc etc) and it looks a little cluttered.

I would love to be able to sub section things to clean it up a bit, such as make a Kids section and then have TV and Movies in sub sections under it. Another example would be TV as a top section and then have Shows and Extras as sub sections.

This would just allow me to organize media a little cleaner. I realize this would probably cause extra work for the scanner, but it would still be a nice feature to have at some point in the future :)

Thanks!

That does not address the issue mentioned here.  That thread is about grouping movies in series together.  Movie series are just one (small) example of the potential for using collections.  The poster here references children's movies and tv shows.  These do not fit as well with that thread and map more closely to the currently implemented collections functionality.

Collections in general already allow you to assign movies to "sub-sections."  Collections do have some shortcomings, though.  Notably, TV episodes should be able to belong to collections without having to add the entire TV show (think holiday episodes).  Also, it would be nice if you could share collections without having to share the entire section (potential use in extending larger libraries to younger audiences or different audiences.  If you could assign smart collections (based on rating, director, etc.) this could accomplish quite a lot of the above without requiring separate maintenance.

So, the good news is that subsections are already implemented and fully supported:  they are called collections.  The bad news is that there are still lots of opportunities for them to be enhanced.
