Subtitle default style being overridden on Shield

In Shield player settings I’ve set subtitle style to appear yellow with box background.

When playing certain files with external SRT subs this style is overridden and subtitles appear as default (white with no background).

I haven’t been able to isolate what file formats or streams could be triggering this. Presume it’s a bug with Shield PMS or client?

Could you post a srt file where the style is overridden?

PS: If the subtitle are in .ass or .ssa, this is totally normal.

Have PM’d you an example. All my subs are SRT fyi.

I’m not sure it’s the subtitles themselves though as I batch convert all subs in the same format.

Let me know if you’ve got any suggestions.

Monitor playback via Plex Dashboard → Now Playing. Expand see additional details.

When the desired style is not used, is the media direct playing, direct streaming, or transcoding?

Also, are they embedded in the media file or external?

Check if there are several subtitle streams available for the video. It might be that the client is playing a different than the selected one. (Which might be an image-based one, so you can’t format it.)

It’s always direct playing/streaming and confirming they’re all external SRT.

Confirming there are often multiple subtitle streams muxed into my files.

You just reminded me it could have been the Android bug where any muxed-in ASS subs trigger Plex to ignore external subs. Unfortunately dashboard still says external SRT is playing.

There is no reason to trust the dashboard in this case. If even the app doesn’t know which subtitle it actually plays, how is the dashboard supposed to know better?

That’s true. I don’t know why I didn’t think of this as the dashboard is misleading when the ASS bug is triggered too.

Thanks.

Reason I asked. When transcoding video, Plex for Android TV ignores subtitle settings unless Override included subtitle styling = on.

Example: movie/show with external SRT subtitle file

Settings: Subtitle color = yellow, override = off
Direct Play: subtitles are yellow
Video transcode: subtitles are white

Settings: Subtitle color = yellow, override = on
Direct Play: subtitles are yellow
Video transcode: subtitles are white
