Subtitle missing for last several updates of Plex

My subtitles used to work fine for Plex. Several updates back they stopped working. I have tried several different threads and suggestions, but nothing is working.

  1. I verified that the ‘Local Media Assets’ was selected
  2. Under ‘Languages’ I have selected:Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks (English)
  3. Files names are of the format:
My Movie Name (2019).mkv (or avi or mp4)
    My Movie Name (2019).en.srt
  1. I have also tried My Movie Name (2019).eng.srt
  2. I have also tried [ ] brackets on the date

Any help would be appreciated.

Is the movie ‘matched’ or unmatched?
Please take a look into the Plex XML info of the movie.
Please tell me what value appears in the guid="......" atttribute.

guid=“com.plexapp.agents.imdb://tt3450958?lang=en”

OK, this tells us that the movie has been matched with the default movie agent ‘Plex Movie’

Now if you go to
Setttings - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
is the line ‘Local Media Assets’ actually existing or is it missing?

The line exists and it is checked

  • Checked Local Media Assets (Movies)
  • Checked (greyed out) Plex Movie
  • Unchecked Fanart.tv
  • Unchecked CineMaterial
  • Unchecked OpenSubtitles.org

May I see the actual file names please?
Do also activate the display of file name extensions in Windows. Otherwise it may be misleading.

Examples:
War For The Planet Of The Apes (2017).eng.srt
War For The Planet Of The Apes (2017).mp4
Murder on the Orient Express (2017).eng.srt
Murder on the Orient Express (2017).avi

Did you copy these examples? Or did you write these new?
Compare the upper/lower case spelling between movie and subtitle files. These must be identical as well.

If that still doesn’t bring any progress, I think we need log files.

  1. activate debug logging (not ‘verbose’!)
  2. quit Plex Server
  3. wait 1 minute
  4. start Plex Server
  5. wait 2 minutes
  6. Perform the Plex Dance with one movie
  7. wait 3 minutes
  8. fetch log files and attach them here

I copy/pasted the names from Explorer. When testing the new movie, I removed the “.eng” from the subtitle file, based on a video I found for naming conventions (the link in ‘plex dance’ was invalid for naming)

War For The Planet Of The Apes (2017).mp4
War For The Planet Of The Apes (2017).srt

After following this process the subs for the movie above appeared.Plex Media Server Logs_2019-07-07_16-29-20.zip (2.7 MB)

And what happens if you add in the .eng again?
(You might have to tell Plex to Refresh Metadata or Analyze after doing so.)

Please consider putting a movie into a folder of its own, as soon as you add “sidecar” files to it. (Be they subtitles, posters local extras etc pp.)

I added the .eng back and put the movie and srt into their own folder and reran the steps and the subtitles appeared again. Does this mean that I have to move any movie with a subtitle to it’s own folder and redo this process again?

Not necessarily. First try to Refresh Metadata and/or Analyze on an affected movie.

But I recommend to get into the habit when adding new movies.
