Subtitles are stopping films from playing (Not solved yet )

I have changed the original Title to reflect what we have discovered in this discussion**********
There were many films I could watch before this latest update, but now when I try to play them it comes up as unsupported or corrupt.
I was watch a film one day and came to resume it the following day and it wouldn’t play at all (With the above message).
Lots of my films it now will not play, but some still will.
If I copy them to a memory stick and stick it in my player, then all is fine. (Sort of defeats the object)
Universal media player still plays all my films etc
Please tell me this is just a bug which is going to be fixed.
I have no idea what is going on.
All comments are gratefully received.

@Deomandinka
Without a bit more info, I can’t say for sure. I have found, for instance, that I can’t play some files back if I use Safari (Mac,latest version), but I can using Firefox(Mac,latest version). Browser/App and Plex Media Server host OS would all be useful information to troubleshoot.

Hi Thanks for the reply. This is on a windows 7 platform. Ok there are various media types which used to play and now don’t MKV’s seem the most predominant. The issue is that, before the update they played fine (Literally the day before I was halfway through a film the next day, the error messages), now they don’t. Nothing else in my system has changed apart from the update…

@Deomandinka - You’re probably going to need to post logs to for someone to look at (not me). Without those it is hard to tell what might be wrong.

The best thing to do is delete the current logs and then recreate the problem. Grab the logs, post them here. Post the zip file of the logs, do not copy and paste the log content here in the forum.

Also, more details - like what version is your server (don’t say “latest”), what player are you trying to use, what version of that, etc.

How do you delete them, I can only find a save option.

Cheers

Sorry this hasn’t answered the question, it was a misclick but I can’t get it to revert to No instead of yes. X(

Right below the section that says “Easily gather logs” is a section called "Manually finding log files.

Ok the server version is Version 1.2.7.2987. The web version is Version 2.10.10.
The two files at the bottom of the log which failed to run are Jupiter ascending (Mpeg4) and gold rush (MKV with H.264 encoding). Both of these files used to play fine and after the last update they now will not play. This is just two of many files. I have enclosed the log files. They play fine if I copy them to a USB stick and plug it directly in to my Sony blue-ray player.
As before they used to play fine over Plex. They do play fine with universal media player.

Now can anybody please please help as this is driving me nuts.

Thanks

Sorry forgot to say this in on Windows 7. The only new files from windows update (Since just before the problem started) were defender ones. There has been no new software apart from updating Plex.

Your logs are from the plug-in logs folder. These don’t have the PMS logs which are i the parent folder. Easiest way to get logs is to use Plex Web and go to Settings \ Server \ Help. There is an option to download the logs, which includes all logs.

Please look down at the bottom of the zip file, the log you need is the last file in the zip.

Ok MovieFan, We have discovered that it is the subtitles which are stopping the films from playing. Every folder I have which has subtitles or MKV containers which have subtitles DO NOT PLAY. If I remove the subtitle file, they play. There is obviously something really amiss with the subtitle element of plex…

Here is another log file with fils which will not play due to the subtitle file.

Any suggestions ?

Cheers

That is the DLNA server log. Were you playing through DLAN?

I can’t find in your log where you are trying to play a video. Do you remember what time it was? If not, can you recreate the problem then get me the logs right after.

Yes I was playing through the DLNA server.

I have recreated the problem @ about 17:43 onwards

You can search the files to find the following films

The Mysterious Island
Jupiter Ascending
Gold.Rush.S07E06.No.Crane.No.Gain

All of these used to play with subs and now if I leave the subtitles in the folder the film will not play as I’m guessing the subtitle file stops it.

So If I go to “Server” “Languages”
and untick “Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks”
“Subtitle mode” to “Manually Selected”

It reduces the amount of films which will not play, however you then cannot select any subtitles.

Thanks

Ok found the error. The error shows that the transcoder ran into an issue reading the source. Mostly the subtitle you have is not encoded properly. If you can provide the srt file for The Mysterious Island, I an try to reproduce.

Ok, but this used to play quite happily until just recently. Also that this is happening with virtually every subtitled film I have.
I have also checked the encoding and file types etc with the Plex user guide and they are correct, so you might want to bear that in mind.
FYI If I play them direct on the PC they work with subs. So I’m guessing it is to do with the DLNA Server.

Sorry I haven’t gotten back to you. Your subtitle file appears ok. I was able to play back a video using your subtitle. The only DLNA player I have to test with is my Android phone. What are you using? Do you have another device you can use, to check if it’s maybe the device?

I am using a Sony blue ray player (BDP S7200). It works fine if you use a USB and play direct also it works fine with Universal media player. It hasn’t had any firmware updates which could has stopped it. Like I said at the start, it was working fine till I upgraded to the latest version. Can you perhaps give this to other one of your Plex buddies to have a look at if you hit a wall?

Cheers

We have seen reports of Plex’s DLNA server having issues working with some Sony devices. We are looking into the matter. I don’t have any more information beyond that.

As I said at the beginning of all this. It was working fine until the latest update. If you could pass this info on it might help.
