Subtitles Break Android Players

Since about 2 weeks ago I have been unable to watch any shows using subtitles (noticed primarily from watching anime)

This affects my pixel 3 and nvidia shield in the same way, however I can cast from my pixel 3 from plex web to my shield and it will work.

Just not when using direct through the android device (either)

Works absolutely fine on an ipad too. And any browser.

The shows will work flawlessly when subtitles are not selected, but as soon as they are it had a continuous loading spinner. Then eventually errors out.

I was wondering if anyone had something similar?

The server has been running them fine up until a couple of weeks ago, it is not the power of the server cpu.

The eventual error says Playback has stopped because the connection to the plex media server has been lost. Please ensure the server is available and retry.

I am on the server at the time of error, and everything seems to be in top shape.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just wanted to also report the exact same issue with also the same versions that started around the same time.

  • Pixel 1/Nvidia Shield - KO with subtitle
  • Web - OK
  • IPad - OK

The type of sub doesn’t matter .str/.vob/.ass, none worked

Current solution involve

  • Disable new player on Nvidia Shield
  • Downgrade version on Pixel 1

The fact that the old player works properly with the same media/settings suggests that the a regresion occured within the latest update that prevent the new player to run properly.

Attached is a error log taken from the Pixel 1 using the remote logging trying to play a media with a external .str , the same media played without the subtitle works perfectly.

Glad to see its not just me.

Now that you mention it, it did definitely stop working after the automatic updating player loading menu appeared.

Afterwards, it didn’t work.

same issue here

i have a nvidia sheild pro - as soon as subtitles are turned on the shield plex player my Plex Server gets pinned to the point of being useless.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried setting the player back to the old one?

That fixes my subtitle issue on the shield.

The only thing I can thing is that you have a pro.

I have the first gen non pro.

It still won’t work on my android phone either.

Does yours work fine on a browser?

My workaround was to open up a browser on phone and cast it to shield from there.

That temporary workaround should work for you.

Sorry for the late response, but in theory the issue has been fixed in our latest beta (v7.30). Any chance you can give it a go? Thanks in advance

I will give it a test in my phone first, and then will try the shield TV when I’m back and provide feedback.

Done, though it can take up to 1 day to process in Google Play side so I’d suggest waiting for a couple of hours and try again later. Thanks

@jesusmc just tried on my phone, anime with subtitles works fine.

Will try some more later with different variations.

Also will try my shield with new player instead of old player later.

@jesusmc I’m ezpecting the same issue in twi Nvidia shield TV, I had registered for beta program, can you kindlh priorize to try beta app??

Just want to aware that given the current situation with COVID-19, Google Play is delaying every publish so it might take a bit to get beta updates to people.
