Subtitles causing transcoding and buffering, need fix

I have Plex Media Server running on my Synology 920+ NAS. Without subtitles it works well enough. But with them enabled the stream constantly buffers and stops. I watch on my Roku Soundbar, if that matters.

As near as I can tell subtitles are causing Plex to transcode. My NAS is likely not strong enough to transcode, and that doesn’t surprise me. What does surprise me is that even though I set burn in subtitles to image only, I still cannot watch movies with subtitles.

Being able to have subtitles is absolutely vital for me, and I have no doubt such a basic feature of watching movies will have an easy fix. So what do I need to do for subtitles to work properly?

Use .srt subtitles and avoid image based subs (PGS, VOBSUB) if your streaming device does not support them. Set burn in option on automatic.

Keep in mind that some Plex apps (LG) burn in .srt even if only audio is transcoded.

Is there a setting to use only SRT subtitles, other than setting it individually on each movie?

Subtitles are on a per media item basis. They are curated with each file.

PMS recognizes both internal subtitle streams (those found in the file)
and
subtitle files co-located with the media (Example:)

Movie (Year)/
   Movie (Year).ext
   Movie (Year).eng.srt
