I have a library full of cartoon shorts. It’s set up as a TV show library. For some reason, subtitles come on by default. These are not flagged as forced, and some are external. I can turn off subtitles while watching one cartoon and they will be back on when the next one starts. My languages settings are as follows:
{X} Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks
Prefer audio tracks in: English
Subtitle mode: Shown with foreign audio
Prefer subtitles in: English
I only want subtitles to come on automatically if they are flagged as forced, as I have been able to do in the past. My other libraries do not have this problem. Are my settings right? Is there something else I need to fix?
Investigate your files. Which language is set on those audio and subtitle tracks?
If it’s anything other than English, Plex will enable the English subtitles automatically, because it’s assumed that you won’t understand the audio.
The subtitles are not flagged as forced. I just created a test user to see if it had the issue. For the test user, the subtitles are not enabled by default, so it must be something profile-related. Edit: It also appears to happen with only one series in this library. There are four series, and only two have subtitles at all.
Is it possible that you have enabled the subtitles for this whole series in general?
If you edit at the show level, you can set the preferred track selection.
Or if you played the series before in Plex, and have manually enabled the subtitles back then, they would be still enabled.
The latter can be confusing if you’ve replaced the files in the meantime, and the replacements have a different number or order of subtitles.
I didn’t know about this setting, but I found it. Everything was set to “Account Default”. However, toggling it appears to have solved my problem. Thanks!
