Subtitles don't work in the app

Subtitles don’t seem to show up during playback on either the Android TV app or the Android app, regardless of whether these subtitles are embedded (MKV), external, or downloaded. Cast and the web player don’t have this issue. I can select the subtitles just fine, they just don’t show up during playback. What can I do to fix this?
