Subtitles don't work on Android TV

It seems that subtitles just don’t work on the Android TV app running on my Sony Bravia. I’ve tried changing the burn setting between Auto and Always and it still doesn’t work. Same movie plays fine with subtitles on the Xbox One app and on the android app on my phone.

I am also running into this issue on my Nvidia Shield Pro 2019

It seems to only happen when the video needs to be transcoded, happens for both SRT and PGS subtitle files.
