I have TV and Movies that have subtitles embedded in the video file as an MKV.
I can see and play them on the WEB client and VLC, But my Roku’s (3) don’t see the subtitles at all, It always says none… If I add an external subtitle srt then it does pick that up.
anyone else seen this problem?
is there a solution?
I can’t say I’ve seen that. I have a few srt sidecar files, but most are embedded in MKV files.
Are they all UTF-8 plain text, or other various formats?
this is from the Web Client showing the embedded subtitles, I did try all of them to make sure that they all played without a problem thinking that maybe one is causing the issue.
Well… maybe a MediaInfo report would show something out of the ordinary:

I have violent allergic reactions to:
ASS
and
More stuff (to go wrong) than I need
(maybe you need all those tracks).
Apart from that it all looks pretty normal to me.
So are you saying that your roku’s show the embedded subtitles.
Mine work with external subtitles. only.
Roku setting show 6.4.10.6174-1475be6a9
I’m thinking thats the version
Yes indeed.
I had those subs I just muxed in handy - so dropped 'em in the same hole:
I do notice yours don’t show ‘external’… I think we’re onto something, but I don’t know what.
I notice you have a French track named Forced, but not tagged as such. What is your native library language? Just so we’ll know.
It’s english…
That show is from FOX it has all the tracks so it’s just containerized after.
I just played it on my iPhone and it shows the embedded subtitles and does play them…
are these files coming from various sources - or are you creating them all in house?
This is a TV series DVR local…
But I have movies and other shows from other sources that this happens.
It’s been like this for a long time. I just found this new series and wanted to watch it but there is a lot of French dialog that I need the subtitles for. I actually downloaded the srt and was able to watch it using the Roku. Figured I post this just to see if it was being worked on or not. If there is a lot of foreign dialog in a video I just go find the subtitle myself.
There maybe times when the embedded worked just didn’t notice.
Right I got ya… are you on the latest Public App - or the Preview App? I use both so that shouldn’t matter.
I use forced all the time, both embedded and sidecar. Sidecars are named:
Project Blue Book - S01E01 - Episode Name.eng.forced.srt
I also see this filename and structure:
M:\series\War of the Worlds (2019)\Season 1\War of the Worlds (2019) (S01E01) (2019-10-28) (1080p-h264 DTS-6ch) Episode 1.mkv
and can’t help but think this might be better:
M:\series\War of the Worlds (2019)\Season 1\War of the Worlds (2019) - S01E01 - Episode 1 [2019-10-28 1080p-h264 DTS-6ch].mkv
'cause what you have is all kinds of wrong on many levels - not that is has anything to do with this problem, but it might.
You have PM.
Try those files and let’s see if they work as expected.
Never had a problem with my naming format. Actually seems to work better as I notice many who have had issues that I just didn’t see with the same show/movies.
