Subtitles not available on Roku for shared user

One of my shared users, a Plex Pass user, cannot get subtitles on his Roku (before and latest drop, but, I think did in past). He can get subtitles on his iPad/iPhone. This is downloading/selecting subtitles from OpenSubtitles, not necessarily showing them.

Anyone else have this problem or can suggest thinks to check. Roku has settings on for captions, same as mine, which works

Having managed a few Rokus myself, I feel your pain.

In my experience, streaming SRTs from OpenSubtitles is temperamental at best when it comes to what Plex will display. (I’ve never gotten that working, personally.) The fact that it works on iDevices is interesting, but Roku is an odd duck amongst the Plex clients, lacking features that other clients support well, so I’m not too surprised.

As for a workaround, this can be fixed manually on a per-item basis (once for each movie or episode):

  • Locate the media files on disk

  • Download SRTs from OpenSubtitles somehow (not through Plex)

  • Place SRTs alongside the media files with similar names. For English-language movies, the files should look something like this:

    .../movies/Some Movie (2019)/
      Some Movie (2019).mp4
      Some Movie (2019).eng.srt

(Don’t forget: replace eng with your desired 3-letter language code, and add forced as needed.)

  • Select the subtitles as usual

However, what server are you running? We can probably make the subtitle problem much less tedious…

Because manually downloading subtitles can be a pain, consider using a program like Bazarr [sic] in conjunction with Plex to manage subtitles automatically, thus eliminating the problem altogether.

Personally, my users are quite happy with the automated approach – everything is seamless for them: Subtitles just appear in the Roku menu (as long as captions are on). Plus, as a server admin, the optional flexibility and “It Just Works™” approach (akin to Sonarr and Radarr) is great for me, too.

Be sure your shared users have the right audio and subtitle settings set

Directly to setting

I appreciate the suggestions so far. Let me give a little more info.

For this one shared user, they can pull down “more…” subtitles on iPhone, iPad, and iMac. When attempted on Roku, they get message, “something went wrong while searching subtitles for your media”

On my Roku, it works, but it is top end Ethernet version. Theirs is Roku 3 (4200]. Don’t know if this matters.

I have settings ‘newplaza’ suggested set on my server. Is that something each user needs to set for their account on internet Plex…if so, why would it only affect Roku?

If avoidable, I would like to stay away from SRTs, except where known to be needed, As an English speaker, most products don’t needed it. (Except, of course, where English accents keep us separated by a common language :grinning:)

Yes. Every user account has this option. Cause not everyone speaks our language.

Because they are $@#$@#$s. The whole global caption thing..PITA!! But really, don’t know.

Mine too(4200X). This is what I got on 7 or 8 episodes(various shows)

But this is what I got on a few movies.

So… It does work… at least on movies, lol.. Tried both Plex for Roku 6.3.4(stable) and 6.3.5(preview)

Some additional info from my user…

Roku used to give “more…” subtitles. Apparently stopped due to no changes made by user.

Roku or Plex update caused???

Can you provide the Plex username of the shared user that isn’t seeing the More... options. This should be available for movies and episodes.
