Hi everyone!

I’ve been having trouble with subtitles not being found by plex for some time now. There have been some updates in between so might assume there were problems there. The .srt file is sometimes not recognized when residing in the same folder as the video file, having the exakt same name as the video file. The subtitles field in the plex server interface says “none”: image. Changing the name on the subtitle and updating the library however seems to work. Is there some problem with the subtitle naming convention? Please let me know if there’s any more information I can find out to track down the issue.

and ensure language code is correct in the srt file. For example, for english subtitles your file should be .en.srt. Also ensure your movie agent in settings has local media assets enabled.

I’ve always used the two letter code .en.srt which is also what is doc’ed in the link I included. I think three letter code will also work but have never tried it

2 Letter code may, or may not work across every single device, but 3 letters absolutely will. Everything I own that adds a language tag, for any reason, tags with 3 letters.

Generally, 3 letters will work on everything on Planet Earth.
2 letters might, might not.

“My file naming has worked this way for ever!”
is different from:
“The Correct File Name”

“My File Naming” might work - until it doesn’t, but “The Correct File Name” always works.

I tend to recommend what I KNOW is gonna work…
Also, I’m pretty lazy, but not so lazy I can’t add a ‘g’.

Please show some actual file names of video files and the accompanying subtitle files.
In the case of TV show episodes, do also include the full folder path.

@JuiceWSA mmmm interesting, if 3 letter code is recommended why is 2 letter code called out on the support page ? I’ve always used .en.srt for all my subtitles and never had a problem from my users on any device. Actually did not even know 3 letter code was allowed until I looked at the support page again today.

Hi! Thanks for the reply. It’s actually a bit inconsistent for when it works and when it doesn’t. For example This combination was not working just now:

Folder F:\Videos\Movies\Now you see me 2
Now.You.See.Me.2.2016.1080p.BluRay.6CH.shAaNiG(.mkv)
Now.You.See.Me.2.2016.1080p.BluRay.6CH.shAaNiG.eng(.srt)

Then I updated metadata and it seems to appear again, along with 2 other subtitles which I think are the automatic subtitles which I have enabled.

Changing the name of the files to
Now.You.See.Me.2.2016.1080p.BluRay.6CH(.mkv)
Now.You.See.Me.2.2016.1080p.BluRay.6CH.eng(.srt)
and updating libraries seems to remove all subtitles (both the srt and the automatic ones). When I again update the metadata it seems to appear correctly again.

Testing this out it seems quite consistent that the subtitles do re-appear when updating the metadata of the movie, but it’s also consistent that the srt is not automatically recognized when the file changes name, i.e. which I would assume also holds true for e.g. newly added files or moving of files which would be somewhat annoying.

Is this perhaps some clash with local subtitles along with automatically downloaded subtitles?

I did not have the .eng language code but I tried it out with the same problems, as replied to another poster in this thread. I had local media assets activated for “personal media”, “plex movie” and “the movie database”, but actually local media assets was not at the top of the list for “personal media”. Maybe this has some unwanted sideeffect?

According to the log you uploaded, the LMA does find one external sub, but it’s without any language identifier!

So consider, and guessing due to the screendump, as well as log files, that you should name your local srt file as:
Now.You.See.Me.2.2016.1080p.BluRay.6CH.ShAaNi.sv.srt

And regarding language identifiers, then @anon5074910 and @JuiceWSA, both 2 and 3 letter ISO codes are supported!

Which log are you looking at? Hadn’t looked into the logs myself since there were so many. I do know that the subtitles showed up from time to time but it seemed quite inconsistent. See my reply to another post here for the symptoms. Seemed like the srt was found when I updated the metadata for some reason (with or without language identifier).

Also usually it works without language identifier (it just shows as “unknown”). Is that not supported?

And FUI, reason I guessed Swedish, was due to the screendump, as well as logs indicate, that you from OpenSubtitles wants those :wink:

It’s strongly recommended to rename the folder F:\Videos\Movies\Now you see me 2 to F:\Videos\Movies\Now you see me 2 (2016)

Ok cool thanks, maybe I can see some more information in these logs regarding when the matching succeeds and not in the future.

Here’s another example of a subtitle that has “disappeared” for some reason.

I know for a fact I’ve had working subtitles for this video before. Again, changing the name into something else and updating the library works but I’m very reluctant to go and do this for all of my subtitles. Is there some way to do a full re-scan for subtitles perhaps?

It is the ‘Local Media Assets’ agent which is responsible for recognising external subtitles.
Did you deactivate it previously for a period of time?

Atfer adding new external subtitles, ‘Refresh Metadata’ on the movie in question should be enough for the new subtitles to get recognised.

‘Scan Library’ does something else.

It has never been deactivated AFAIK. Only discrepancy I found was that under “Personal Media”, the “Local Media Assets (Movies)” was prioritized lower than “Personal Media”. (In the image I’ve switched them back around)

I’m doing a full refresh of the metadata for my movies to see if it helps.

About “Scan Library”, I was actually referring to “Update Libraries” in the server application (not the web gui) that I generally use to force an update to locate/identify new or moved files. (See img: image

That doesn’t matter for subtitles.

You better forget that this is there, because it triggers a library scan for all libraries you have at once.
I recommend to scan each library individually, (and only those libraries which actually had new media added to them).

I’m new to th forum and after 20mins looking around I simply cannot figure out how to post a new question (which is insane, have been using internet for the past 30yrs!). Anyhow…hope someone sees this.

I’m having issues with subtitles in MP4 movies. Plex server recognized the subtitles on my computer and on my Apple TV (as in: it shows they’re available), but they simply do not show up on either device (PC/appleTV). When watching the movie, I go to settings, select the subtitle track…and then nothing happens. I’ve been having to convert my MP4 movies to MKV and only then I get subs to show. Any help appreciated!
