Subtitles on all the time

Server Version#: Windows 10
Player Version#: 4.12.3

I’ve renamed my subtitle file as per previous advice on this topic.
My Local Media Assets are the first on my list of Agents.
Plex picks my English subtitle file up fine.
I’ve also set OpenSubtitles as an alternative source.
I’ve configured the Plex settings to only display subtitles when foreign audio plays.
I’ve set my default language to English.
When I play the movie, subtitles are on all the time, no matter whether the dialogues is in English or not.
Any ideas/fixes greatly appreciated.
Regards.

I’ve heard that can happen when your audio is - Unknown:

An Unknown Perhaps

Mine is set to display always - that’s working fine over here at my house.

Is the audio track in your videos tagged with a language?
How are your Audio & Subtitle settings looking under https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/account
(maybe supply a screenshot)

Thanks for these responses.
Yes, the subtitle file is renamed according to Plex naming guidelines.
When I go into Settings when playing the movie and ask Plex to find the relevant subtitle file, it finds it ok and, streams it.
Just that I get the subtitles showing all the time, not just ‘foreign parts only’.
How does Plex process the subtitles files, just out of interest ?
I.e., does it need a subtitle file that contains all the subtitles for the video and detects, from the video when a foreign language is being spoken then goes to the subtitle file and displays the relevant English subtitle to display ?
That would be pretty impressive.
So, I’m also wondering whether Plex can only handle subtitle files which contain ‘foreign parts only’ subtitles and then displays those … ?
Again, so, if I’m giving Plex a subtitle file that contains all the subtitles from the video and pointing Plex to that subtitle file, then, this could be why I’m getting subtitles displayed all the time ?
Following on from that, can I assume that, if opensubtitles.org, (which I’ve also selected, (do you have to log in to or set up an account then log in to opensubtitles.org or is this irrelevant as far as Plex is concerned ?)), doesn’t contain a subtitle file that contains ‘foreign parts only’ subtitles, that this could be why I’m not getting subtitles displayed unless I select the subtitle file that I’ve got - which contains all the subtitles for the video ?
Apologies for the long response.

and a miracle.

Forced Subs have had the Native Language lines removed - physically - from the text by human intervention. They are ‘tagged’ as ‘Forced’ when they’re a track in a media file, or sidecar srt file -
A Movie (YEAR).xxx
A Movie (YEAR).eng.forced.srt

Forced subs ONLY contain the foreign language ‘translations’. <—for whatever language Plex determines is ‘Foreign’ to you - based on your language settings.

Forced subs (or any subs for that matter) can only work properly if the audio and the subtitle language and tag are properly defined. Otherwise subs will be on (probably) - 'cause Plex don’t know what else to do.

If, for instance, your Account Language is English:

Your properly tagged audio is English
Your properly tagged sub file (or track) is Forced and English
Plex knows to turn them on - 'cause you’ll need them.

Your audio is tagged Chinese
Your sub file is tagged English
Plex knows you don’t speak Chinese 'cause your Account language is English, so Plex also knows you’re gonna need some subtitles - if there are any in English.

If everything is ‘Unknown’ - that’s pretty much where Plex stands as well -
not knowing what to do.

O.k., thanks again for those responses.
So, I’m understanding that unless my subtitle file contains just ‘foreign parts only’ subtitles, if my subtitle file contains all the subtitles and, I switch subtitles on, and switch Plex to use that subtitle file, then I’ll get all subtitles displayed - english and foreign parts.
So, if I don’t want that, then, I’ll need to hope that opensubtitles.org contains a ‘foreign parts only’ subtitle file that matches the version of my video - that Plex can access.
Appreciate if I’ve ‘got’ this.
Thanks.

Precisely.
You will have to look for ‘foreign parts only’-type of subtitles. Unfortunately, these are much harder to find on the usual websites.
Your best bet is to rip these from DVD/Bluray.

O.k., thanks very much to everyone for these responses.

John.

You actually will have slightly better luck at:
https://subscene.com/

But those will have to searched for outside of Plex with manual intervention.

You can also try https://www.addic7ed.com/ (more TV series than movies) when Subscene fails. There’s a few annoying pop-ups you might have to ignore and close, but once you get through them, there’s a good selection that is available.

Their subs are usually added to Subscene, but often are available sooner on their web site.

… and you get 6 (six) downloads a day - if you’re not a member - so…:
Be Efficient…lol

Not with the entire suite of every ad-killing-popup-squashing add-on available to Chrome. It is rare anything makes it through that gauntlet.

True that. But they will lag behind ‘the release’ by days to weeks at times - so if you’re looking and not finding - look again. I am looking for:
Hidden (2018) - S02E02
Someone did E1 perfectly (found in temporary link on a forum post). They have E2 and it’ll just show up one day (perhaps not soon).

I’ll be looking for it - or another version with subs - 'cause I’m here to tell ya, those Welsh people talk funny… and I have the English Version.
