Been trying for several hours now to get Plex to diplay subtitles…
Came home from work and wanted to watch the new episode of Westworld in english with english subtitles. After an hour or so I gave up on automatic download, fired up good old Boxee 0.9.23 on my iMac and used it to fetch the subtitle file. Then I manually copied it to the TV Shows library folder next to the video file. Rescanned the library, emptied the cache, rescanned again serveral times. Moved both files out of the libary. Rescanned. Moved them back. Rescanned. Still no luck.
Read somewhere than I needed to have ‘Local Media Assets’ selected so I checked out the Server/Agents settings menu (which it overly confusing btw). Nowhere to save settings. Wtf? When I move to another tab and back its unselected again. AAAARGGH.
No Westworld on the big screen tonight. Will using Boxee on the iMac.
I am a Computer Scientist btw. Not sure what Plex’ target audience is!!!
Local Media Assets is checked, but at the bottom of every Agent List I have.

When those pesky Germans speak (they are a chatty bunch) the subs appear like magic in Plexweb, OpenPHT and on every client device I have.
I did manually download the proper (forced) sub file from: https://subscene.com/
and that took about 10 seconds a couple of years ago so it wasn’t a big deal.
Naaaa… I just downloaded the file that indicated it only contained the German words - 'cause I’m pretty good with the English words (not as good as you, but good enough for local work).

Exactly. Which is what a ‘forced’ subtitle is.
Now Plex needs to be informed about the fact, so it can pick the subtitle automatically under the right circumstances.
And that is done by appending the .forced file name suffix.
Maybe that’s where the ‘convoluted’ part comes in. When I download the sub that says: ‘for non-English parts’ and I name as above it just works and I stop trying to overthink it. I got a lot more important stuff to worry about.

Seriously considering porting Boxee to AppleTV…
Works fine here, maybe the SVT file isn’t supported or recognized, is the extension correct? sometimes it LOOKS ok but you have to verify it IS correct… I find subtitles are a nuisance at any rate… why can’t plex download subtitles for me? That would be nice…
anywho the subtitle file needs to be in the SAME folder as the video you are playing as well and it needs to be identical to the name of the show as well… That’s my experience anyway… If you have Westworld-4K lets say and the svt file is westworld.svt it will NOT work… it needs to match exactly the title.

I did verify it through VLC on my computer where the subtitle shows up fine. Also I downloaded the subtitle via opensubtitles through Boxee , which automatically gives me a correctly matched subtitle filename. Faster than going though the website in fact.
My issue seems to be, as I wrote I my original post, that my Server/Agents settings doesn’t get saved…

What version of the server are you using?
Which web browser?
Are you using any extensions for your web browser which suppress parts of the pages or alter them (adblock/noscript, flashblock etc pp)?
