(Success) AppleTV on Remote Network with Transcoding!

I have a Media Server at my house, and wanted to watch my content at my girl friends house on her Apple TV. I had previous sucess doing this with the jailbreak on 5.0.2 using the Plex App, but now that is outdated and causing me problems. So I figured it was time to try Plex Connect.

 

 

My House:

-Internet Connection: 100mbit Download / 5mbit upload 

-File Server -> Media Server (Running PMS and PC) -> VPN Router

 

File Server is running FreeNAS (Core2Duo - 6gb Ram)

Media Server is running Ubuntu LTS (2x Xeon 3.2 GHZ Processors (32bit) - 4gb Ram) - Can't transcode 1080p

 

Girlfriends House:

 

-Internet Connection: 20mbit Download / 512 kb Upload

-VPN Router -> AppleTV (5.3)

 

Transcode Quality: 3mbit (In the video it turns out I had it set to 4mbit, which works about 90% reliably)

You are correct you do not, you can use the same technique with port forwarding, however in your PlexConnect config, you have to specificy your public IP for the plex server and not use GDM. You will need to forward the appropriate ports to on your router as well (32400, 80, 53(UDP), 443). Also in your PMS configuration the easiest way to get it working is to add the remote location's IP under the "Allowed Networks" section.

I find that many routers these days come equipped with VPN support, so if you are confortable with setting it up I highly recommend it, as its easier and more secure. 

If I got any of these setup details wrong feel free to correct me.

I wonder if this could work the following way:

Use Plex App on iPad or iPhone to access your PMS remotely then AirPlay the video to a local ATV without any additional configuration on ATV, i.e. no PlexConnect on the local ATV.

That does work, pretty well actually, you are limited to stereo sound though

No, you arent.

Enable Dolby Digital on Apple TV on your Plex Media Server's settings. Under Transcoder (you have to "Show Advanced Settings")

Then if your ipad/iphone is using the new transcoder and you airplay you'll get 5.1 sound.
