Sudden choppy stuttering playback on an RTX3090

Hey guys,

I have not had any playback issue with Plex HTPC for a long time. I went on vacation at the end of February and when I came back Plex auto updated. I noticed that since then playback on 4k HDR files stutters.

After going through a bunch of settings it seems the only setting that is impact this is “Enable Refresh Rate Switching”. I have always had this on, but turning it off if the only way I can get playback to be smooth.

It seems like 1080p files aren’t impacted by this, they playback smooth. Only 4k HDR.

I’ve tried changing a bunch of other settings (including disabling hardware decoding), but they don’t seem to have any sort of impact, and I am at a loss since Plex HTPC had previously been playing back perfectly.

Playing these files on other players such a Dot Player, or even an old version of Plex Media Player doesn’t induce the same issue.

Any ideas, please?

Thanks

Typically it is the NVIDIA settings which is causing this as it treats HTPC like a game. You should check any settings which have non-default values.

If I read your log correctly, it seems you have all the HDR settings turned on. (Metadata passthrough, HDR switching…) These settings seem to cause serious frame dropping with Nvidia’s default power settings. Has also been written here => [HDR Metadata Passthrough] - Plex HTPC for Windows and how to change it! (all in the first post) - Maybe changing the GPUs power setting also resolves your issue. It fixed it for me and my RTX 3050.

#Edit: Some (up to 10) dropped frames at the beginning of playback and with frame rate switching on are normal*

Yeah, I haven’t seen any non-default values, and nor has anything changed in the Nvidia settings.

Thanks for the reply. I ended up confusing myself and it does indeed seem to be HDR Metadata Passthrough that is causing the issue.

I have disabled it for now and I will revisit that thread for the full solution later in the week
