Sudden loss of 4k transcodes

Server Version#: Version 1.24.4.5081
Player Version#:

Hello Plex Support,
I’ve been banging my head against this for 3 days now. I have a PMS that contains a good amount of 4k material I watch it at home on a Shield Pro in direct mode, and at my GF’s house on a Shield Pro transcoding at 12mbit.

After being super stable for almost a year, it now will not play anything without pauses. And it doesn’t matter what bitrate I pick.

I’ve never had to look at the logs before - looking at them now (and with a bit of research) I can see that the transcode speed is consistently dropping under 1. So that’s a problem. It’s a 16 core Threadripper 1950x with 128 GB pulling off local storage.

I have tried this both with hardware encoding and without (Nividia M2000) - historically I have run only software because of the blurb about higher quality and I had the cpu power to just crank it out.

Interestingly, the boxes overall CPU usage never goes over 20% - the transcoder seems to hang out around 7-11% (guessing on that one) and I do remember it would hammer the CPU’s for periods of time when transcoding 4k.

It’s almost like it’s kicked over to single threaded encoding.

I have ruled out any bandwidth problems - and I have seen the pauses on my shield pro, 2021 ipad, 6 core I7 laptop, etc - so it doesn’t seem to be related to the player.

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction

Thanks in advance - and please let me know if I can provide something other then the debug logs!

Definitely curious to see if someone who knows more than me can see what’s happening here. If I’m asking for help in the wrong place let me know. Thank you!
