Suddenly black window - plex unsuable

I’m using the plex player for windows app for years now, currently on windows 11. Nvidia graphics card. the server is on a different device

Suddenly, Plex crashed. Now when I open it it is massively off screen for no apparent reason. also, the screen of the app is black:

r/PleX - suddenly black window - plex unsuable

that is literally all I get from the app for days now. There is a blue shade on the screen, but I cannot recognize what it is. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, I tried reboots. Nothing works. It’s completely broken.

Also, the window’s icon (top left) changed for some reason. this is the plex player app.

What do I have to do to get it working again?

thanks

can anybody please help me out here? I cannot use the plex app for a week now

Instead of investing your time in trying to figure out how to get Plex to work, my honest recommendation would be to invest your time in trying out one of the alternatives. Depending upon what you’re using Plex for, there are really good alternatives on Windows (Emby, Jellyfin, NextPVR, Kodi).

For my needs, Jellyfin/NextPVR works great (and they’re free). I still have Plex installed but I haven’t used it day-to-day for quite a while now – Something major is always broken and problems tend to be outstanding for months before they are even acknowledged, never mind fixed.

hello,

sadly, this is not helpful since without plex I cannot watch movies from the plex server.
plex worked it’s broken now for no apparent reason… there has to be a possibility to get it to work again. please respect that I want to use plex. thanks

could somebody please help me to fix plex again?

thanks

Three things to try.

  1. This will fix the off-screen issue. Not sure about black screen.
  • Exit Plex for Windows
  • Go to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex and copy plex.ini to plex.ini.bak.
  • Edit plex.ini using a text editor and remove everything in the [ui] section.
  • Relaunch Plex for Windows

  1. If that does not work, exit Plex for Windows, delete plex.ini, re-launch.
You will have to re-configure all your settings.

  1. If all else fails, perform a complete uninstall/re-install.
  • Uninstall Plex for Windows using the normal Windows uninstaller (Win10: Control Panel → Programs & Features. Not sure about Win 11).
  • Delete %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex.
Note: Any media download to your PC using Plex for Windows for offline use will be deleted as well, as it is stored in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex.
  • Reboot your PC.
  • Download & install current version from plex.tv.

oh man that is awesome!!! thank you so much!!!

removing the UI part fixed it!

Had to go with new install.
