Suddenly cannot play many podcasts - Error code: h4 (Not Supported)

Beginning this morning I found that about half of my podcasts no longer play in the web player, though they do still play on an iOS client. When I try to play the affected episodes I’m given the following error. Is there a solution to this? Restarting the server doesn’t help, removing and re-adding the podcasts doesn’t help. Server logs show nothing during these incidents.

Playback Error

An error occurred trying to play “213 - Dogcatcher Inutaro 01 - Brave Dogcatchers Unite!! The Menace of the Dogs Overload G-System!!”.

Error code: h4 (Not Supported)

I am having this issue as well. I have tried Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, and tried in private mode too. On multiple computers this error has happened and I have tried different networks as well. I was able to play them fine on my phone through Plexamp. I also noticed that on the computers not all podcasts were effected. Some of them worked and others every episode gave the specific error.

I have noticed the same issue in the past week. Some podcasts work, some give this error.
When I look at the developer console network logs, I see the mp3 file of the episode tries to get downloaded but fails with a CORS error.

It has been almost 2 weeks and this issue is ongoing. I cannot listen to most of my subscribed podcasts via a web browser.

It’s not just you, I’m having the same issue:

Same issue here as well. Error h4 on some podcasts with both Chrome & Firefox (Win10).

So far, podcasts that error in the browser have worked on PlexAmp & Plex on Android, Android TV, and Xbox apps.

3 weeks later this still occurs on the same set of podcasts. There has been no response from anybody at Plex, not even an acknowledgement that the problem exists.

This sucks.

Hello? Anybody there? Plex, wtf are you even doing?

For our friends at Plex Support : Ignoring a request for ANY kind of response to an issue makes for pretty bad optics even to those who aren’t having the problem detailed here. It happens all the time in these forums and, quite frankly, it’s another reason I’ve stopped using Plex as often as I did for several years. If this is what you want, keep up the “good” work. (Meaning, if you want to create the perception that a feature isn’t important enough to garner a response in these forums, don’t change a thing; continue looking the other way when these issues pop up.) If this ISN’T what you’re trying to do, try a lot harder. Or, better yet, pull the feature completely.

It has been over a month. This issue persists. Plex has yet to respond in any way.

Adding the plex-web tag to this - maybe Plex staff watch that one?

This is still happening.

Just found this post. I’ve been experiencing this exact problem for a few months now (since early December 2021).

It actually prompted me to do a complete tear-down and rebuild of my Plex server implementation on TrueNAS to get the latest version. Still having the same issue after all of that.

I am not using TIDAL music, though the posts I keep finding point to issues with TIDAL.

or I find posts related to issues with Chromecast

But I’m specifically having issues with Podcasts playing in web browser version of Plex, not TIDAL music, and no issues with Chromecast.

Based off of some other random threads I found, I’m assuming this “h4” is some kind of audio codec that the browser version of Plex just cannot deal with.

I’m not really sure what to try next. Maybe another Plex server that isn’t running in TrueNAS? could the TrueNAS version of Plex be the issue?

It isn’t specific to TrueNAS; I am running Plex on an x86-64 Ubuntu desktop using the apt repo package.

Yeah, I am on windows and experiencing it as well.

It must be something more specific to the Podcast and other factors rather than anything related to a server. I just tested by shutting down all of my Plex servers, then signing up for a completely new account with a different email address, on a computer I’ve never used before, in a browser I never typically use (Safari on a Mac). With that scenario, I’m not even able to add most of the podcasts that I’m having trouble with (The Greatest Generation, pretty much any podcast from Maximum Fun - none of those seem to be addable…), but I was able to add SciShow Tangents, and then got the same h4 error message.

Same error here also.

On Windows 10 with Google Chrome and Edge browsers.

Works without problem on Android app.

Have used podcasts feature on Plex since they it was introduced.

This error has happened for couple of months now.

Currently I’m running Plex Android apk in emulator on my Windows PC, when I need to use it and that works but, it is not the most simple setup.
