Suddenly getting "This server is not powerful enough to convert video." error

Server Version#: 1.27.2.5929-6000
Player Version#:Version 4.76.1

Hey folks,

Not really sure where to begin with this one. I installed Plex a couple months ago and it was working fine, no problems accessing any media either with the desktop app, web browser, or amazon fire stick. Today I wanted to actually use Plex and could not get it working for love or money.

My plex server is running off of a Synology NAS RS816 running DSM 6.2.4-25556 Update 6.

I spent the evening troubleshooting and loading updates(both to the NAS and Plex to hopefully get them on the latest respective versions. Fixed some other problems but now I am getting this error: “This server is not powerful enough to convert video.” But it was apparently powerful enough to do that before so… what is going on?

I tried unchecking “Disable video stream transcoding”. The file I am testing with is encoded H.265, most of my stuff will be in that. I tried a few other files and got the same error. This is al on the web player, my desktop app decided to log out for some reason and now won’t let me log back in.

Any ideas?

The web player does not support h265. It never has and likely never will. It will always require a transcode. So do not turn off video stream transcoding.

The error happens when you disable video stream transcoding and the file type isn’t supported by the device you’re using (web player). It will also happen when your CPU/GPU is not fast enough to convert the video to a compatible format while video stream transcoding is enabled…

If your other players were working fine that would be because h265 is supported by the desktop app/firestick and didn’t ever need transcoding.
