Suggestion about notifying Plex users about missing shows

I have been a Plexpass users for years and almost from the start, and have an insanely large media collection that i almost exclusively stream through Plex to phones, tablets, computers and a bevy of Samsung Smart TV's.  Love it and will never stop using it.

I was wondering if it's possible if there isn't a way already that to help manage my collection, but is there an option or can an option be created to let a Plex user know when they are missing shows within a series, or even a movie trilogy, etc.  (more for TV shows).

I have over 600+ shows in my NAS build which is just about 8TB (20TB total and growing); so usually when i'm organizing them and shuffling new shows into their folders for Plex to scan/add i notice i am missing an episode(s).  It's a pain and time consuming to go through every show, or generate a file list to review and compare to other sources.  Then having to wait to obtain the show to round out my collection that i enjoy and share with family and friends.

Would love a notification that there are shows missing from a season if possible.

Thanks, and I look forward to your continued success and future releases.

This would be an awesome feature but I assume would probably be hard to implement.

Couldn't you just install Sickbeard or Sickrage for the time being? I agree plex needs this! but for now those 2 ways have been sufficing for me. It gives me a list of all my shows and percentage. You could even install the Trakt Plugin and get similar I just think the interface for sickbeard is better than trakt at the moment since the update.

I actually use https://sonarr.tv/  it has a nice ui, and works a lot like sickbeard.. I also agree that it would be nice if plex somehow notified you if an episode was missing, esp when you are watching them back to back.. Full on episode tracking is to much for me. I like to keep my tracking application separate, as i can add wishlist items to it and not gum up plex with show info that isn't even there..

BTW, i feel your pain. Over 260 tv shows @ 9.2tb

The harder part of you idea is movie tracking. the only application out there that kind of does this, that I know of is couch potato. To be honest it will just save a list of movies and tell you what you have. IMO it doesn't even do this all that well. Im actually in the process of writing my own rails app to replace the darn thing.

I'm checking out a comparison of sickbeard and sickrage right now (http://www.htpcbeginner.com/sickbeard-vs-sickrage/), i'll also check sonarr as well, thank you all for the suggestions; as I've never heard of these i have no idea what they do or what they can do for me.

I have my own methods of downloading and organization (of which is all manual except for the renaming which i use a program which makes things smoother); i'd rather this option be implemented in Plex for a more streamline use of the program rather than depend on another program to do one task.  Considering my comprehensive collection that I've maintained very well, there aren't that many holes to fill, but it still bugs me that i might be missing shows that could be filled in.

Of course i know of shows that still need to be filled in, but have yet to locate the proper episodes to complete a season.  This is mainly with kid shows for my children, for me they are really hard to track down if they are not hugely popular or the sources just dwindle down.

I'm glad you guys think it is a good idea and i hope it can gain traction and wont be a pain to program into Plex should it be considered.

@tomt92, yes i wasn't too focused on the movie side since i know that would be tougher, it would be nice for trilogy's or what have you, but if i had to choose, leave it for Tv Shows.

I agree it would be great if plex could identify missing tv episodes, I currently use TV Rename to identify missing episodes,  it does a good job, it can also do lots of other things but I only use it for missing episode identification.

ya I used to use tvrename ages ago, then moved to sickbeard, tried sonarr, went back to sickbeard, trying sickrage now...

in all honesty I prefer plex not do this, simply because there are already good tv show management packages out there and I'd rather they spend development time on things plex needs to function better and that are not redundant with things that most people are already running

I use Sonarr for keeping track of tv shows and it works good but it happens that an episode or two don't meet certain criteria and thus are not downloaded, although it generates a log I don't always notice and since I use Plex with unwatched filter on, I will have no way to catch it and won't notice it until the plot of the episode reveals that I have missed an episodes.

It seems as an easy fix by showing the missing episodes as greyed out in the Plex TV season view.  Only as a warning so you don't inadvertently miss a episode
