I am looking to take the plunge and get away from running the server from my windows laptop. First of all I use Plex ONLY for direct play to my LG smart TV. So transcoding is not a big deal. I noticed that on the Asustor website that they have an easy install to the NAS. Has anyone had any experience with this setup and can offer any suggestions.
I have been a loyal Plex member since 2013 but have always run the server from my laptop, so this will be the first NAS install.

That’s a pretty low power device. Even a mediocre i3 is two or three times more powerful
On the Windows machine things may have been transcoding in the background that you didn’t even notice. Those items may fail on the NAS
I would install the server software on the Asustor and try it with a variation of media before I commit to moving or wiping out the old server
