Summer Olympics file naming

Server Version#: 1.23.3.4707
Player Version#: Plex web Version 4.61.2 or iOS app

I’m having an issue where Plex is naming the files with the same date and time, which confuses PMS into playing the same file. Also library scanning will group them or do other things like say they are from season 31 or some other confusing thing.

There are 3 or more episodes that all have the same date. When recording, Plex puts the date and “06 00 00” after the data which could be a time, but all the recordings for a given day have the same “06 00 00” time. Plex then gets confused about what file to show and starts to play only the first file of the day even though there are 3 entries in the media library. The filenames themselves have some additional text that identify them as different, but Plex ignores this extra data.

I’m glad other people are noticing this problem. I posted about it in another thread hoping Plex will address the problem before the end of the Olympics.

Try manually renaming them according to TVDB: Summer Olympics Tokyo 2020 - TheTVDB.com

Each category is a different season with events listed as episodes.

The problem (as I see it) is that the NCB live airings are not grouped the same way TVDB has the Season/Episode structure laid out. The airings contain several different events in each hours long episode that all end up in the same file. That does not correspond to a Season/sport, ‘Episode/occurance of sport’ structure.

Ah, it must depend on the source. The files I got are feeds of single events.

Seems so. The Olympics also seems like a special problem for thetvdb too according to this FAQ page: https://support.thetvdb.com/kb/faq.php?id=91 and a complicated mess all around. I can think of a couple ways this could possibly be resolved:

  1. thetvdb creates a season for each Olympic year “Season YYYY” and put episodes into them that correspond to the grouped local broadcast schedules.
  2. plex coordinates with thetvdb to override their DVR data that they publish from gracenote to separate the airings to follow thetvdb’s layout.
  3. i roll my own DVR data and override it myself to follow thetvdb’s layout.
  4. i try to use thetvdb’s layout to split the episode files plex produces into individual category/sport files with corresponding naming.

This would be ideal, yes, but it’s terribly impractical. TheTVDB has a season for each sport and an episode for each event within that sport, whereas NBC is producing one episode from 0:05-02:00, another from 12:00-17:00, and another from 20:00-23:00 Eastern time, and each consists of a hodgepodge of events. A group of us could identify the specific time of each event and publish instructions for splitting out the files, but that’s a pretty big task.
