In the current plex iOS client, iOS Live Photos only have their photo portion uploaded, not the video portion. This makes the iOS camera upload an incomplete solution for backing up photos. From the earlier forum thread ( https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1419462 ) it looks like I’m not alone in desiring this feature.
I am in total agreement with the original poster that Plex needs to support the ability to back up & view Apple’s ‘Live Photos’.
I have more than 200gb of photos that i needed to backup and i looked high and low at all the available solutions based on pricing and features. In the end i was sold on Plex Media Server and its ‘camera upload’ ios feature and therefore purchased the lifetime plexpass (discounted rate).
I know there have been many updates recently to the Plex Media Server and notably as well the Plex ios app camera upload feature now ‘tracks whats been uploaded on your device’ (27th April 2017).
With iPhone 6s and onwards, Apple’s ‘Live Photos’ are available and i use this feature regularly. Not being able to backup (and view) these ‘Live Photos’ via my Plex media server means i cant delete the existing photos stored on other devices. Presently i have an incomplete solution with Plex, that is not future proofed. This leaves me with some devices backed up and others that are not (will have to be re-backedup at a later stage).
I think Plex is really coming along as a solution in the ‘Photo’ media storage arena, though right now after purchasing plexpass for a few months i am adding my voice in strongly upvoting this essential feature request to be added asap!
Please add support for backing up and viewing Apple’s ‘Live Photos’ via the ios Plex app and Plex media server.
Plex has become such an integral part of my digital equation, and at this moment lack of Live Photo backup is the only piece I can say is lacking. Please add!
Thanks for the amazing product. It’s a life changer.
This should be high in the priority list, and I don’t think it would take much time to do. Just let the users decide if they want to upload the small video portion of live photos.
This. please. Yes.
And please, before I commit to another product… my family and I use plex for all our media, a complete mobile pic backup is one of those last items we need, I would rather not compile more software.
Also, in the next week a lot of phones are switching to iOS 11 , which will make the camera default to HEIF if the user also upgrades their mac to High Sierra
( see https://twitter.com/_inside/status/908421982089306112 ).
Hope the plex team is listening, as my primary use for it is photos.
Regarding HEIF, it looks like Plex is working on it: http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/288036/
Hoping this also implies live photos support. Thanks for the upvotes so far.
I am chiming in with my support for this feature. As a plexpass subscriber I view it as absolutely vital if I’m going to continue using plex as my primary photo backup solution.
Have we heard if this will ever be implemented? I would love to see Plex use Apple’s API https://developer.apple.com/live-photos/ and provide Live Photo support. I’ve been backing up my photos on OS X using Image Capture, so it pulls the image and video file for each photo. Plex is viewing these as separate files and consequently doubling the instance of the image. It seems like it would be pretty straight forward to recognize a jpg and mov with the same file name in the same folder as the same image, then have a play button or something to loop the video. Google Photos is smart enough to do something like this.
