Support ending for Facebook login (How to continue accessing Plex)

What’s Happening

We’re continuing to direct our resources and efforts in ways to better serve our Plex community, including improvements to user privacy and simplification of some services. To that end, we’ve decided to officially end support for signing in to Plex using a Facebook/Meta account. Support for signing in using Facebook will end on Monday, November 11, 2024.

We know that this decision will impact some of you and we apologize for the inconvenience. Overall low usage, as well as data and privacy considerations played a major role in our decision process.

To continue being able to sign in to your Plex account, you will need to ensure that you’ve added another authentication method to the account, whether that is a dedicated password or linking a Google or Apple login. You can do so from your Account page once signed in to the account. To avoid interruption, be sure to do this prior to November 11, 2024.

How to Add New Sign-In Methods

You can add new sign-in/authentication methods to your account at any time. Once signed in to your Plex account, go to your Account page.

Add a Password

If your Plex account does not already have a separate, dedicated password set (allowing you to sign in to the account with your account email and the password), you can easily set one for your account.

  1. Open the Account page
  2. Scroll down to the Password section under Security and open/expand it
  3. Choose a new password (making sure that it’s a strong, unique password that’s not used on any other site or service)
  4. Confirm the new password
  5. Save the changes

Once done, you can sign in to the account with the account email and the new password you set.

Tip!: While you’re here, why not make sure you have two-factor authentication enabled for your account to help secure it against unauthorized access?

Add a Google or Apple Login

Instead of Facebook, you can link a Google or Apple account to allow signing in to Plex using those services. You can do that in addition to having a separate password, if desired.

  1. Open the Account page
  2. Scroll down to the Linked Accounts section and open/expand it
  3. Choose to Link your Google or Apple account
  4. When going through the linking process, you’ll need to confirm with Google or Apple that you do want to perform the linking

Once linked, you can then sign in to your Plex account using that Google or Apple account (instead of Facebook).

What If I Forgot to Fix Things Before Facebook Support Ended?

Don’t worry, you can still get things working even if you forgot to do so before the end of support for signing in with a Facebook account.

  1. The easiest method is simply to request a password reset for your Plex account email address. Going through that reset process will set a new password on the account, which you can then use just as if you’d set one via the previous instructions.
  2. If you have a Google or Apple account that uses the same email address as your Plex account, then you can simply choose Continue with Google or Continue with Apple when signing in and it will automatically get linked to the existing Plex account that has the matching email address. (Note that with this method, you must not choose “Hide My Email” when signing in with Apple. If you do so, a brand new Plex account will be created with a masked email address.)
