Support for audiobooks

The Audiobooks feature would be great especially because currently all book are marked played an the track position can#t be remebered after 90% of the book were played. Witch is a big problem if the audiobooks is over 10 hours long…

Implementation is currently not good. Please fix!

+1 for this! I read a lot of Ebooks and listen to a lot of audiobooks. If Plex had that then I would use it.

It really wouldn’t take much to just remember the current play position of an album instead of the current position of a track. There doesn’t need to anything else specific to audio books to make audiobooks viable.

It doesn’t even have to be called “audiobook” support, as this feature would be super nice for listeners of classical music albums, for example, who want to resume between devices.

Has there ever been any official response to this topic since (checks top thread) 2013??

Booksonic is real good. And not a Plex solution. There is a Docker.

No, actually Booksonic isn’t good.

  • It doesn’t honor metadata tags
  • It gets confused by library subfolders that don’t strictly conform to .\author_name\album_name\ (eg. it doesn’t like my having “US” and “UK” subfolders for Jim Dale and Stephen Fry respectively reading Harry Potter).
  • Changing specific album art, after Booksonic has already imported it, is difficult.
  • Changing author art is impossible.
  • The UI is ugly.
  • There are no available apps on streaming players such as Roku.
  • It hasn’t been updated in a very long time.

WOW! Spot on.

I’m still struggling to find a solution to stream my own audio books. Have you run across any other methods that work properly? Plex could work with a few more tweaks. Hopefully, the developers get word of this thread.

I like Audible’s player, but you’re stuck behind the paid wall.

I do use Plex for audiobooks on occasion. However, I have taken the time to split all of my audiobooks by chapter, so that each book is an album of chapter-length tracks rather than a single file. My wife says though that Plex crashes about once per day while she’s listening to a book, which is annoying. I screenshot my place in a book on occasion to create “bookmarks” for myself in the event that I lose my place for whatever reason.

My other personal solution, though not entirely ideal, is to use Emby to sync files to my phone and then have Voice Audiobook Player (for Android) point to Emby’s sync folder on my device. That way, I can use Emby to organize my media, but use a well-made external app to listen to books. I use Emby for this and not Plex because how Plex stores synced content defies being useful to outside apps. The reason I say it isn’t entirely ideal is because Emby doesn’t sync the album art, so I have to add the art in-app or copy it into the book’s synced folder manually.

Thanks! I will look into this.

There is a great solution out now called Prologue:

Thanks! More information on this app (will there be an android version, chapter support…) is to be found on https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/cffe27/prologue_an_audiobook_app_for_plex_ios_now/

I wish there was an Android port.

Yeah I like Prologue a lot too

I have actually discovered that Emby does sync album art that is embedded in the file(s). So I would just have to make sure the art I prefer is embedded in at least one of them to get Voice Audiobook Player to automatically find it.

+1 please

It’s only been 6 years.

Another option, which is quickly developing in to a good alternative but still needs some work for audiobooks is Jellyfin, it is opensource as well, so maybe as time goes it will pick up a few people dedicated to audiobook support.

With the release of Prologue for iOS (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/prologue/id1459223267), and the custom Audible search plugin, this works so well now! Just wish there was a search column for Author/Artist in the search/match modal…
