Support for audiobooks

+one for Audiobook supports!

The only other discussion not implemented with as many comments as audiobooks… is ebook support.

Plex, audiobooks are media too. Plexamp could be a great solution for audiobook playback, please make it happen.

+1 - Plex is great. Let’s keep it going in the right direction.

Hoping with plexamp this is one stage closer. I use smartaudiobook player on android at the moment moving the mp3 files or m4b onto my phone. Has the features I wanted just cant pull from the network. Booksonic can do that but that app I found frustrating.

For anyone on Android looking for a decent Prologue-like alternative, check out Chronicle:

Chronicle just launched on the play store about a month ago. I just tested it on a fresh plex install and it does remember playback progress, even when there’s multiple tracks, as long as you have the buried Store Track Progress checkbox checked, which is off by default (that setting is found here: Plex Web UI > AudioLibraryName > Triple Dots > Manage Library > Edit > Advanced).

Chronicle also has a sleep option, and the pro version has playback speed controls, and apparently the pro version will be adding offline support in the near future. I feel like this discovery may be worth a separate post since this is the first time I’ve seen something actually usable that involves the words ā€œplexā€, ā€œaudiobooksā€, and ā€œAndroidā€.

Only problem I’ve found thus far is that it doesn’t seem to support streaming FLAC audio - only mp3s. I confirmed on both a mac and linux arm64-based PMS that Chronicle threw a weird ā€œNone of the available extractors (d, d, g, d, e, a, … ) could read the streamā€ error. I’ll let the dev know so hopefully he can fix it soon.

In the meantime, enjoy!

First I’ve seen this, will definitely be testing this out today. Thanks for the heads up!

Been testing Chronicle as well and it has been amazing, I highly recommend for those who are wanting audiobook support through Plex. The suport for .m4b files is awesome. Thanks for the tip on enabling Store Track Progress!

Not to take over this thread with Chronicle stuff, but a quick update - I emailed the developer of Chronicle about the FLAC bug I mentioned above, and he got back to me right away saying the library he used to handle audio decoding he thought supported everything he needed, but sure enough, it was missing FLAC support out of the box, and that is what he’s working on right now. So, fingers crossed that’s fixed soon. Very impressed with his responsiveness, professionalism, and the quality of work he’s done so far.

Usage of audiobooks from android auto car screen, same as podcasts

+1. It’s a bit baffling that the developer of Prologue is a million miles ahead of the Plex-Team on this.

Yeah, I sent him an email too with a few ideas, like browse by author/genre/narrator etc. I had an email from him the next day, telling me his thoughts on my ideas and that he was going to implement them.

Cant understand why anyone needs flac for an audio book :stuck_out_tongue: but this app Is pretty awesome

Re FLAC for an audio book - I think a reasonable explanation for why someone wants it is because some audiobooks have soundtracks, songs, or other sound effects, and they’d like those to be very high quality. A perhaps less reasonable explanation is that some people are OCD and want the best they can get no matter the cost, as it may somehow better preserve the richness of the narrator’s voice.

Regardless, I’m happy to report that the developer did in fact update Chronicle with FLAC support, and it’s working great. So, yay for that! Now then, fingers crossed the Radarr/Lidarr team can successfully resurrect Readarr and get audiobook download automation going… https://www.reddit.com/r/Readarr/comments/fuiu5u/status_of_readarr_anyone/

But… but the FLAC files would likely have been sourced from mp3 or aac, which is lossy. If lossiness is found anywhere in the history of the data, then the end result is still lossy.

But… but the FLAC files would likely have been sourced from mp3 or aac

If that’s how someone made a FLAC file, yikes…

Obviously +1 for Audiobook Support. I know I’m dreaming at this point, but it can’t hurt to give my weight to this cause.

In the meantime, if a person wanted to use the chronicle app for audiobooks, how is it recommended to place them in a library?

I’ve read many contradictory suggestions and was wondering if there’s a concensus somewhere?

Thanks.

PS. what does the pro/paid version of chronicle cost?

+1
What’s really lacking compared to other audiobook apps:

  1. Pause playback when there’s some other audio (ex. map directions).
  2. Skip forward/backward within the track instead of going to the next/prev.

Look at Audible. Copy what they do.

#2 has been implemented already (PlexAmp 3.1.1). In PlexAmp, it’s off by default but can be added via switch in the settings.

Excellent. Somehow I didn’t see that when I was looking for it.
Would be nice if it was configurable by the song’s metadata… ie. only enable this for audiobooks… for music, use the default skip track behaviour.

Make sure that when audiobooks are implemented that it will pause when using Google Maps or other navigation services (Not just reduce volume).
