Support for Home videos in 360 / spherical / equirectangular format

Hello Plex Community,

am starting to take videos with a Nikon Keymission 360 action cam. Like some other products, this produces a stitched rectangular video (MP4) that is an equirectangular projection of a spherical view all around the camera (in every direction, including up and down). This is an amazing format and makes really interesting videos, however the infrastructure for viewing them, if you do not want to use youtube or other platforms to store & view, is quite nascent.

Ideally I would like to store the videos on my plex server in “Home Video” categories, and have plex do all the usual transcoding, and have support for viewing them with a PC or phone in the same way as youtube (drag mouse to move the view as the video is running on a PC, aim the phone in desired direction if phone supports it to move the view on a phone, etc). Currently the transcoding would be a great addition as the phones and older laptops are struggling with 4K spherical videos, and I have to manually retranscode them with ffmpeg to half their size so that the devices can cope.

Gopro have released forge.js which is a framework that might be perfect for the client display end, integrated inside the plex clients, both on phones and computers. Is this kind of feature possible, on a roadmap somewhere or maybe even already achievable?

Thanks

Robbie

Plus 1  I want to store and watch my 360 degree videos on Plex. Anyone seen anything else about this anywhere?

same here, owning a fly 360. Is there any open feature request for this?
