XMBC has a fork that supports Dolby True-HD and DTS-HD lossless audio and it would be amazing if plex could do the same.
I understand that technical limitations with various operating systems may be pushing back the release of this feature. It’s ok if you blame this one on Apple.
+1 for lossless audio - I know plex used to be an apple centric type app, but its grown and developed into way more. if apple / osx is the limiting factor on this, other platform development shouldn’t be (plus doesnt this work in xbmc on osx?)
I am a Mac guy, would really love to see this feature on OSX.
My tests were done over 2 months ago, but at the time the feature only worked on my windows box.
+1 for HD audio bitstreaming! At least in the Windows Plex client
I’m using XBMC Frodo 12.0 alpha 5 (Windows 7) and it is working great with all HD audio codecs.
+1,000,000,000
for HD bit-streaming (from Mac OSX Client as my first pref)
Thanks!
I'd have to check on the osx part of xbmc to see if they have it working, my understanding was they wouldnt release it unless it worked on all platforms. I know it works on linux and windows--but I don't run plex/xbmc on osx anymore... :(
+1 Would love to see this working.
As far as i know DTS-MA and Dolby TrueHD dont work because apple in their “infinite wisdom” decided not to support BluRays, therefore there are no drivers to support the lossless audio formats which pretty much only come on blurays. I don’t think there is anything the Plex team or XBMC folks can do about this.
I know it would seem like it should just pass the audio to your receiver and let the receiver handle it but i dont think it is easy as that. There is a thread that goes into detail somewhere in the forums
edit - here is the thread that a member explains it very well http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/36479-lossless-pcm-blu-ray-tracks-working-on-2011-mini/ looks like you can do LPCM
Please integrate the latest XBMC audio engine (Frodo) into Plex Media Center for Windows
- LPCM can be done on OS X
- DTS-MA and TrueHD bitstreaming will not be possible on OS X.
I do agree that the Windows Plex port should be able to bitstream.
7.1 LPCM does not output correctly on my 2011 Mac Mini with Lion or Mountain Lion. No audio data is being sent to the rear channels (only 6 channels have signal).
A decoder in Plex could convert TrueHD to PCM so that HD audio could be output.
HD audio bitstreaming works great in Windows on my 2011 Mac Mini (up to 7.1). I have to use XBMC to achieve it until the Plex client gets some love (much needed, long overdue love ;-).
I don’t run Plex on my Mac, but I would love it if the Windows Plex could do HD audio bitstreaming! Thanks!
You are correct regarding the 2 rear channels in 7.1 LPCM. Best you can do is 5.1 LPCM, and you can technically convert the DTS-MA/ TrueHD track to LPCM if you use something like Clown_BD with a Windows machine or partition.
Conversion to LPCM in the player would be technically possible, but would involve a lot of work, and, from past experience, the Plex crew has no interest in trying to take on HD audio.

Agreed. DTS-HD MA & Dolby TrueHD bitstreaming are both features which I eagerly hope come to the Windows PMC client ASAP. I’m ignorant as to the technical hurdles on the Mac side, and I certainly hope they’re surmountable, but, based off of XBMC’s progress, this is definitely possible for Windows. So, please, HD audio bitstreaming on Windows?
+1
Another vote for HD-audio support.
It’s a pitty OSX is a limiting factor here. But I would be more then happy to install windows on my Mac Mini to get HD-audio.
But how about a hardware-player developed en build by Plex?
[ never mind ]
Early 2021 clean-up: implemented (supported on certain clients connected to adequate audio equipment / receivers)
