Can any version of Plex Pass direct stream dolby atmos or DTS:X

Hi All,

I’ve searched this a few times but I can’t seem to derive a clear answer. Can any version of plex (xbox, apple tv, desktop, etc…) play the immersive audio formats? Is there a plan to allow that. Many of my rips now accompany with atmos tracks.

OpenPHT? Maybe.

It really sucks that Plex left everyone in this limbo, while waiting for PMP to get finished. They discontinued PHT years ago, and PMP is still in beta… So now, OpenPHT is our best option. An official Plex player is going to have to set the bar pretty damn high to get me to switch away from OpenPHT now.

Plex PMP Embedded works great for bitstreaming Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Pair it with a NUC5CPYH/RAM/USB Thumb Drive for about $150 and you are set.

These are cool solutions but would they be able to be implemented on an AppleTV or Xbox?

No. AppleTV does not support HD audio bitstreaming as the audio subsystem “CoreAudio” will not support that. It is not likely to ever be supported on that platform. HD audio bitsreaming on the Xbox 360/One is entirely up to MS. As of now, they don’t even support bitstreaming with the native BD player.

Plex uses the native player on both of these platform you referenced. You are at the mercy of Apple and MS in this regards. You asked for a version of Plex that will support these new HD audio codecs. Plex PMP is not yet capable of decoding these HD audio codecs, so your best bet is to bitstream it on a HTPC with capable hardware.

Looks like I’ll use my HTPC when utilizing Atmos. Hoping ATV Gen 5 will allow bitstreaming.

I bet you won’t see this until the iTunes Store or some big streaming provider has content with HD audio.
