Support Naming Local Media TV Shows

I’d like TV show libraries using local media assets to be able to pull the names from the local media somehow.

Right now, even though the documentation lists a way to name them, episodes still only show as “episode 1” etc; this in the documentation so it isn’t just a bug: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200265256-Naming-Home-Series-Media .* This also seems really fast for Plex to fix.

Update: The features I want, and some extras that would we great, are in these plugins: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/88982/rel-extended-personal-media-scanner/p1 and https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/83440/rel-extended-personal-media-shows-agent/p1 .

The support article you reference is for Home Movies, not normal TV Shows.
If Plex isn’t showing correct episode names for TV Shows then something is happening.
Incorrect embedded metadata, naming issues…

First half of the first sentence of the article: “For this type of organization you must make a “TV” Library, not a “Home Videos” Library.”

However, you’re correct that the article is somewhat miscategorized and really should be merged onto this page: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220717-Local-Media-Assets-TV-Shows

Yes, if you want your Home Movies to a have a TV Show Library feel then you need to follow those instructions

Yes. I want to make a TV show using local media assets (essentially of home movies).

The description of how to do every part of that process except naming them is on this page: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220717-Local-Media-Assets-TV-Shows (my second link).

The description of how to name them exclusively is here: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200265256-Naming-Home-Series-Media (my first link).

  1. Given this, it would be much more clear to merge the articles, since they’re effectively on the same topic.

  2. When using the show naming scheme of “Christmas - s2012e01 - Getting Ready.m4v” as described in my first link and incidentally shown in my second link, the episodes are only titled “episode 1” etc, not “Getting Ready.”

This is not a bug on my part, because the documentation in my first link says: “Note: Currently, the “shows” will only be named as “Episode 1” etc. Any additional information included in the filename (like “Getting Ready”) is currently ignored.”

I would like to have the additional information of the name be used to name TV shows when importing them in this format, since the guide in my first link says that’s how to name files for this, but that its currently being ignored.

A few more notes:

  1. If you think this was unclear in my original feature request, please tell me how it should be clarified.
  2. You’re free to reproduce this bug yourself as an experiment, all other aspects of metadata importation for TV local media assets from that guide worked perfectly for me before.
  3. If you’d still like to see the extensive details of what I did here: https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/62rity/plex_server_for_linux_cant_name_tv_episodes_using/
I posted this problem on Reddit as a tech support request before finding the documentation saying that the feature I needed wasn’t yet in plex.

The only thing, to me, that was unclear in your original post was that you indeed had Home Movies.

No need to reproduce it as, it is working as expected. The scanner will not use the episode name for Home Movies

Early 2021 clean-up: implemented (tv-show libraries with a personal media scanner/agent can use embedded metadata)
