Sync is Dead (almost). Long Live Downloads! (Android)

I keep my whole music library synced to my phone so i don’t have to use mobile data to play my music.
It sounds like the download feature will break this functionality when sync is gone.

Thank you!

Could I request a feature to offer more than the next 5 unplayed? I travel a lot, and sometimes want to keep 10+ of my unwatched episodes of a series for those exceptionally long trips. Sync was nice because I could keep 10 or more, then at the hotel, it’d dump the ones i had watched and grab the next. Now, it seems the only way to do that is “the next 5 unplayed”, which isn’t enough.

I’ve already made a note for the team to discuss this as a future feature.

When I switch to downloads I am no longer able to download collections, I can only download individual movies/shows. Is there plans to bring this back? I routinely work in the field with little to know internet and like to have enough content to last, but doing it one-by-one is annoying. Plus when I did try that after the 4th or 5th download I started my server crashed.

Collections are a little tricky right now, there are technical limitations. I don’t know if/when this might be added back. As a work around, you can create a smart playlist based on a collection and Download that playlist.

Edit - And we would love to look at that crash. If you can get me your full PMS log package and let me know about what time the crash happened, I will see if we can find anything.

I noticed that if you go offline during a download before it’s completely finished that you can’t even go in an view the episodes that have downloaded. it seems you should be able to.

Can you clarify? Do you mean you are downloading 1 episode and go offline before it finished? If so, that is intentional. You can’t see a partially download item. If you are downloading multiple episodes and go offline, you should see the episodes that did finish.

Another thing I am finding annoying with download is the error handling. I’ve always used playlists to sync music to my android phone. When there was an issue I could click on it an see which song was causing an issue. With Download it just says x number of songs failed to download click to try again or swipe to delete. When 197 of 200 songs have downloaded, my only option is to keep clicking or erase the 197 songs. No option to view which songs that are problematic. And I have to check from my phone because I can no longer send tracks from my computer to my phone like I could with sync. Seems like Plex threw out all the good things of sync and built download from scratch.

I don’t remember sync being able to show this before. I’ll check and see if we can add additional error messaging for failed downloads.

Glad to see this feature working well, if I could just +1 to changing the max limit per show up from 5. Doesn’t need to be unlimited, but at least enough to download a series would be great. (25 max?).

@anon18523487 sorry to take us in a slightly different direction, any guidance on iPad availability of the new feature (even a guess between days/weeks/months would be helpful).

Yup, will be added in the future.

We’re getting close to so not too long.

Thank you for the reply and insight, really appreciate it.

Hey guys,
I have tried the new download feature and for all the downloaded item it download the external subtiles. Although it downloads the subtitles it doesnt show it when watching the content.
While watching, on playing settings the external subtitle it downloaded is automatically picked but it still not showing in.
How can it be fixed?
Thanks!

I also would like to see that feature. Like in Sync it would be nice to put in a number I want to download.

And is it possible to tell a client to start a download over the web gui? Like it was with sync?

I’ve been using the new downloads, thank you for your efforts!!

My main use is because my internet is spotty as hell where I live. (to be clear, mobile [Verizon] internet.) I use openVPN and block connections that aren’t VPN.

I’d love to use wifi, but I live in a house with many people and if I can’t throttle, people get mad. (throttle downloads request please!) I like to watch in full quality.

Also, I have to turn off wifi entirely because PLEX is persistent about the downloads. (pause download request please!)

Complaint: Is there no crc check (or equivalent?) My downloads “miss” a section of media constantly. It’s better than sync, because it will continue where it stops “missing,” but annoying as hell. (bug fix please!)

Whole episodes or movies, or a portion from the middle of a specific video?

Portion in the middle. Luckily I can skip forward and continue, but I miss part of the story/movie. Confirmed it’s not the source video and not a transcode error (original version.)

I saw the same. I had a show that wad downloaded, it played for a minute and a half, then jumped to 6 min. there was no way to see it on the download. watched via stream and had no issue confirming source was fine.

Eagerly awaiting the iOS version of this! Can you take a look at and/or confirm that these two issues have been (or will be) fixed:

Thank you!
