Trying to download on a Samsung S6 Tab Lite and nothing is really happening. I click the download icon and nothing seems to change. Sync was really working perfectly fine to be honest for me before this.
Server Version: 1.23.3.4707
App Version: 8.19.2.26377
Too bad. Being able to send items using a PC is better than just looking at each and every device to initiate the download and then check what was actually sent.
I’ve just started to test out the new function. But I’d really like to see data viewable on PMS to show me who has what “downloaded” (sync’ed), but also I’d like to be able to add/edit/change what is “downloaded” to devices & users. This was something Sync did, but I think it’s wrong not to also have this in Downloads.
For example… The family is going on a trip/holiday, I’d sit down a couple of days before we leave and sync files to family devices, so I know there would not be any problems. All of this I could do through PMS, and better yet I could see if everything was ok with the devices.
Lastly, I see also that you can’t “download” more than 5 un-watched TV episodes. This needs to be looked at, and hopefully have a custom no. once again, as frequently I’d be looking at either 12 or 20+ for certain TV media.
While we’re on the subject, when will this feature be added to the Nvidia Shield (and other Android TV devices)?
There was a long running thread that auto-closed 2 weeks ago, that ran for years, with people asking. The APK for general Android Devices is bit-for-bit the same as the Android TV APK!?
When will be able to cast downloaded files. I know casting can be a problem if the media is not compatible with the cast receiver, but at least let us try and do this?
When will we be able to access to local files on our mobile devices, as they’re currently hidden from view? Could this be made optional, are at least let us designate a “folder” where downloaded content is stored instead?
The new “downloads” feature is almost working on my Kindle Fire, but even though I tell it to use external storage, it doesn’t honor that setting and keeps downloading the files to internal storage instead. I’d love to see that fixed, cause it is working faster and better than the sync option.
We are reviewing this and may add more options in the future. Alternatively, you can create a smart playlist for unwatched episodes and Download that. You can even set the limit in the playlist or use it to Download all unwatched.
There are no plans at this time to bring this feature to Android TV. Although we are no longer calling this Mobile Sync, it is still intended for mobile devices.
This is planned. It’s not currently working but hopefully in the not too distant feature it will work again.
Downloads in intended to be used by the Plex app only so there are no plans to expose it.
This is an essential feature for me. I hope it is on the roadmap. I‘m so often in hotels or apartments with really bad connectivity. Cast some content from the smartphone to a fireTV or a chromecast is so incredible. Or cast at a roadtrip a movie to the kids tablet.
A couple of days now and the downloads have not finished for me. All music from playlists. Sync had an issue with a few tracks but it was transcoding and didn’t take this long. I leave it running constantly with the phone plugged in and not letting it go to sleep and it’s still not done. I appreciate the effort to improve and shuffle is actually shuffling the music, but I had faster download speeds in the early 2000’s on dial up.
Thanks for coming back to me on some of the questions I made. With regards to Shield and Downloading content, I think this is a little unfair to say there are no plans. Both OSs are Android (mobile handset + TV), and as such enabling Downloading on Shield is only a matter of an UI update (since the core software is capable). A Shield device is mobile, and I know of plenty of people who work away from home and would like to plug their Shield into hotel TVs.
I couldn’t agree more. Personally, I’d be really happy if I could use my Shield in hotels also. Because at the moment, if you can’t cast from the phone, you’re left attempting to use hotel wifi to connect an Android device (e.g. Shield), which is usually unusable for streaming.
IMO I don’t see why android boxes, like Shield, cant be enabled to Download TV to it. It just seems strange and can make the whole “using devices when away on long term business” are minefield and overly complicated!
Sync was also not available for devices running Android TV. There is no change to this decision with Downloads. There is a feature request, Enable Sync to Android TV / Streaming boxes, but there is little interest so far.
I’m still unclear. I’ve a Plex Pass and I’ve shared my server with friends, and granted a few the ability to synchronise content from me. Under the new Downloads feature, will they have to pay for a Plex subscription or not?
No, any of your friends that has a Plex account now will not need a Plex Pass. It will work for them just as Sync did, as long as the server they are accessing has a Plex Pass. This is no different than before. Only future new Plex accounts will need a Plex Pass.
